My partner and myself have just spent our third New Year at the Metropole....this time last year I gave 4 stars sadly this year it's three.
We kept the same room we always have, it was clean and toasty warm .... as was the rest of the hotel....plus we had a powerful shower with beautiful hot water.
Now let's talk cutbacks as there were plenty of them!
Three years ago the entertainment was fantastic....just check out the poster on the outside of the hotel advertising dazzling cabaret! We remember when dancing girls in sequins and feathers did grace the hotels ballroom but not anymore, the only show this time featured enthusiastic dancers in tired costumes with not a sequin in sight ...cutbacks! Perhaps the poster needs to be taken down so as not to give the wrong impression.
The hotel could have saved themselves a fortune on printing out the New Years itinerary as hardly any of it happened.... there was only one show as the one on New Years Day didn't materialise and neither did the quizzes .... the same singer appeared for two nights running and on New Years Eve at 10.30 pm after a 20 minute slot she shot of the stage like a whippet on lino never to be seen again... that was it... and at 10.45 pm it was cd's all the way til midnight! Sorry more cutbacks!
So finally to the Worrall restaurant which to us has always been a quiet little oasis.... not anymore.... the two waitresses have been reduced to one and when she wasn't moaning about how tired she was she couldn't half throw the clean metal cutlery into a metal tray from a great height!
The New Year Gala Dinner...this year without crackers or wine or even a paper hat....was hot but nothing gala about it whatsoever ..... Sorry even more cutbacks!
So will we return to see in 2015? If the chairs in the ballroom are replaced with new thicker padded ones for those boring waits wondering if the bingo queue will ever end well maybe we will.....it all depends on those cutbacks!
