My friends had stayed here before, but it was my first time. They told me Andy (the manager) was lovely, and he certainly was! Yes, it's a bit of a maze and the steps are not great after dancing for four hours, but the bed was comfy, the bathroom was clean (although could maybe do with a window or some sort of ventillation), towels were clean, there was tea and coffee, and the breakfast on the two mornings was amazing! (That said, the hash browns on the Saturday morning were preferable to the fried bread on the Sunday morning - most of our party left the fried bread).

Another plus is the location - a few minutes walk to the sea front and the tower.

I probably wouldn't stay here with my young daughter as it was quite noisy in the middle of the night (although some of that noise could have come from the rest of our party!!), but would definitely stay with friends.

I can't comment on value for money, as my friend paid for it for my birthday, but it was probably cheap! :-)

where to start?!
The before checking into the room they had made a mistake with a large group booking, some were in twin beds instead of doubles and some were in triple bedrooms instead of singles. Not off to a great start.

After eventually finding the room in the maize of hallways, stairs and corners we find that the room was in a terrible state! Inch thick dust on the TV and skirting boards, the carpet clearly hadn't been hovered in a long time! Urine still in the toilet, hairs in the shower cubical, old toothpaste in the sink and the bathroom floor was sticky underfoot.

I am not usually one to moan, but the thing that really topped us over the edge was a very bad leak in the ceiling every time the room above us took a shower. Water pouring through the ceiling onto the carpet, not just a drip a full stream of water lasting as long as 20 minutes at times. Toilet roll sat on the dirty floor, dirty curtains and windows. Absolutely everything was dirty except the bedding sheets. Very warm room as the radiator handle had broken off on the hot setting!

Even found an empty condom packet behind the headboard!

Breakfast didn't get much better, a very average, unvaried cooked meal.

After staying at the Calypso Hotel I could not wait to get home and have a good wash. The whole place was grotty top to bottom!! Would never recommend this place to anyone!

Fab location. Staff very welcoming and helpful. Breakfast very good. Dinner hit ad miss, sometimes rather dry. Curtains and windows need a good clean. Not much on hospitality tray, but if asked for more you were given plenty. Staff very attentive to all your needs. Hotel needs updating but all in all a great place to go

Myself and two work mates stayed here Oct 7th 2013 for 4 days and could not fault it. Nice welcoming staff and Andy the hotel manager goes that extra mile for you. The food is bang on with nice clean rooms.Rose and Nathan tend to the 24 hour bar and nothing is too much trouble. Everything is close by so what more do you need? Would definately book this hotel next time i go on a lads weekender.

Room Tip: Room 111 is quiet

Lovely people, ok rooms , quiet and got a good nights sleep, good position close to the main town, great breakfast. No lift so not good if you aren't fit! Free entertainment when we were there, well stocked bar, but more beer choice would be good ?

My wife and I went with a David Urquart 5 day superdeal so they chose the hotel. As other reviews say pleasant welcome by Andy. In fact the main cook was ill and he had to cook "as a novice" He did brilliantly! Food was simple with choice and plentiful. The coffee is very weak so we took extra sachets ! On arrival some with less mobility were in difficulty as no lift so any who dont like steep steps keep clear. (There is a stair lift to first floor) Our average size bedroom (211)was newly painted and bathroom had had a makeover. All fine for what we paid. Tea and coffee in room for first night then you have to pay £1 for pack. We had taken our own ! The fairly small bar lounge was adequate but seats not that comfortable. There was entertainment but as it started at 9.30 we preferred the TV!
All staff were friendly . The central location ..just 3 minutes from the Tower and promenade and opposite Houndshill shopping mall make this good choice .
