“Good things come in small packages”
Reviewed 3 August 2011

When researching this hotel, I noticed a lot of the reviewers comment on the small room size. Indeed I've stayed in larger hotel rooms before, but certainly not for this price. And besides, the room was thoughtfully laid out, so it did not actually feel small. It did however feel clean, quiet, contemporary and comfortable. The staff were helpful, and kindly upgraded me to a sea-facing room at no additional charge. I thought that because of the low price I was "rolling the dice" so to speak, but of the 5 hotels I stayed at on this UK trip, (all much more expensive) the Strand is the one I will remember most fondly.

Went for the Northern Rail Cup final. Pity Halifax lost but the Hotel was comfortable and the food very good. We had a three room suite just for a couple so we had plenty of room.

Overall, for three star accommodation and food but five star service.

The manageress, bar manager, receptionist and some [sadly not all waiting staff] are a credit to the hotel and do provide exemplary service, so anything else that has been written about service to contradict this attitude, please disregard it, as it was exaggerated or has since been rectified.

However, the quality of the food could do with some improving. Although the dining room is a beautiful area, with fresh decor and light seaview surroundings, dishes mainly at dinner were a hit or a miss. Our group felt that at busy times, maybe understandably, due care attention to food and service did slip. On one occassion my sticky toffee pudding [which was nice a previous night] was tough with a tar substance [supposedly toffee] at the bottom of the bowl, as in a rush the chef had hastily microwaved it and forgotten in the rush. Only an example, but nonetheless sadly not a one off. However, that is not to completely stereotype the efforts as poor, but perhaps more waiting or kitchen staff at weekends would aid this.

Rooms - clean and spacious enough to move freely. However, we did have a problem with ventilation in our room, as it was not a seaview one and instead faced a stone wall at the back of the property. The view didnt bother us, but the small window did nothing to help with the extremely hot room we have above the kitchens I believe. So please check when booking where the room is located. Not much the hotel can do to aid this, other than introduce a cooling system into such rooms unfortunately, but potential guests beware, such circumstances are not pleasant in the warmer weather months!

Entertainment - a hit and miss but I doubt many people who book for Blackpool stay in every night all the same.

Again I just want to add this is a positive review for the Strand but with some improvements, it could be even better.

Service was ridiculous waited on breakfast for an hour and a half and it was pitiful. Staff were rude and paid no attention. Rooms were small and poky. Will not be coming back.
