“Decent central hotel”
Reviewed 4 October 2009

As previous reviewers have mentioned, the location is a strange one in the middle of a roundabout and the building is an ugly concrete tower. If arriving on foot, the way to get to the entrance is through the multistorey car park opposite. The guy at reception on check-in could not have been any more helpful - very friendly & professional. Other staff were also similarly professional. Room service menu had a good selection of dishes and was reasonable value & quality. The hotel is very well situated for anyone visiting Leicester for the football - the Walkers Stadium was about a 15 minute walk away. The central shopping area of Leicester was about a 10 minute walk. Would stay there again.

Easy to find, yes it is sort of on a roundabout, but that really isnt an issue.

reception was quick and very cheerful,. they were busy but simply called for other staff to help.
We found the room wasn't a family one, a quick call to reception and someone came to give us the key to another room, no fuss, no "trial" member of staff even walked us to the lift chatting amiably as we went.

Room was clean, well furnished, bed comfortable.
There was a little street noise as the local "boys" staggered their way home. but not really an issue.

Bar/restaurant was very nice, food good, breakfast was excellent.

Gym was very good, plenty of stations and free weights, pool area was very good.
Staff were very friendly and helpful

Would certainly stay again.

This hotel has a very poor location - right in the middle of a noisy roundabout which means you cannot have the window open at night. My room looked as if it had last been decorated about 20 years ago. The smell from the old shower curtain pervaded the room, the mini-bar was empty and I was horrified to find I was in an inter-connecting room which allowed me to hear everything going in next door... and I mean everything.
On the plus side the pool was OK - though you do share it with lots of locals so can get busy. Room service was also enormous portions but breakfast was as described elsewhere here, hard croissants, runny egg etc all served in a darkened room.
Staff were average.

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review following your stay with us earlier this month, and although some of your feedback was negative we do appreciate this as it helps us to monitor our service and standards. Thank you once again for your time and should you return to our hotel please request a 'quiet' room and we will do our best to allocate one that is not interconnecting.

This is a very average Holiday Inn. The location, on a roundabout and surounded by concrete walkways, is not the most picturesque. The room was large, but not really very up to date. Staff were helpful though - one even lent me her own umbrella.

Breakfast was really pretty bad. Ancient pastries, watery eggs, canned fruit, dire coffee.

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review following your stay with us earlier in the summer.
We are disappointed that you found us - as well as Leicester 'underwhelming'; however, pleased to note the staff were helpful during your visit. Upgrading of the exterior of the hotel is scheduled and access to the hotel should be improved with the regeneration of the city currently in progress.
Thank you once again for your time.

My husband and i were in leicester for the cla game fair and had booked 3 star accommodation online. When we got there it was appalling and there was no way either of us would stay there. The people we had booked through got us a room in the holiday inn - also 3 star. It was lovely. The staff were warm and friendly, especially the waitresses in the dining room. The food was great, although there was a long queue on the Saturday morning for breakfast - everybody was up early to go to the game fair so not surprised by queue. The room was big, well furnished and so clean - the bed was enormous and really snug. The bathroom was lovely and spacious with a fabulous shower - it was by far the best shower i have ever been in.

Only fault i would have was that they were a bit mean with the shower/bath gel and shampoo - only one of each provided. I used half the shower gel on the first night and went to go for a bath on the second night and there was no replacement shower gel only the half one from the previous evening - very disappointing. Just as well my husband had his own shower gel as both of us trying to share one of those small bottles wouldn't leave us very fresh!

Would definitely stay here again though if i was ever in Leicester.

Stayed here for two nights for the annual Big Session festival at De Montford Hall when the usual hotel we use was unavailable (even though we booked 8 months ahead). I thought this was going to be too far from the Hall and from town, and it was a bit of a trudge if you were carrying a day's food, raincoats, spare shorts, Saturday 'papers, etc etc. Well you never know what the weather will do, it's only mid-summer after all. But it was only about 15/20 minutes' walk into town or to the Hall, which isn't too bad if some of it can be done on lovely New Walk.

Leicester is a lovely city by the way, great new shopping mall (try the most designer-y toilets in Britain!!), great covered market, little lanes with courtyard cafes, good pubs, and lots of regeneration. We look forward to this trip each year.

First impressions of the hotel are really bad. It looks like a converted council tower block painted flesh colour and right on the main ring road with a car park at the back. And inside the decor is bland and looks a bit pre-makeover although I understand it's already had that. The worst is the breakfast room which has only one window and is very soulless.

But the reception staff were lovely, nothing too much trouble. We booked one night through the website best price for executive room with breakfast £70 and got a second free by redeeming loyalty points (should have been £105) without breakfast. For that 'executive' we got two little bottles of free mineral water, one chunky kitkat each day (!!! a bit mean between two), bathrobes, slippers, a desk, a hyper-sensitive minibar, although this locked itself the second day - as did the one next door we understand), safe, and the biggest bed in the world.

Again, full marks to reception - we knew from experience that breakfast is hard to find in town on a Sunday other than somewhere like Wetherspoons, but they cheerily swapped our complimentary breakfast from Saturday to Sunday which was a help.

The room was big, if dark, the window had been fixed so it wouldn't open (beware claustrophobics!) but I couldn't help feeling how much better it would be if the interior design had been more imaginative - the room was absolutely identical in size and layout to the one we had in Birmingham's Crowne Plaza (same chain) but could hardly have been more different in style. That is a designer's delight, all purples and rich browns and textures with big pictures and silky bedding.

Bathroom was great, toiletries nice - everything you should need - and a pillow from the menu brought to your room by smiling staff. Breakfast was fine, a decent hot buffet although one of those infuriating feed-through toasters, some fruits and yoghurt; staff were friendly, attentive and greeted you by name, coffee was topped up discreetly when you were up for second helpings, complimentary newspaper offered. No complaints at all.

Finally, there were lots of minor problems, but all were dealt with efficiently and without argument. For instance, on checking out we were asked for £24 as our free night hadn't fully registered with the computer system, but there was no issue about putting it right. Only problem was when we got to the car park ticket barrier, it wouldn't let us out as it still wanted £24! Fortunately a very nice attendant was leaving at the same time as us, could see that our ticket had been validated and let us out anyway.

There's nothing more impressive than people holding up their hands when a mistake has been made, apologising and putting things right with a smile. MPs, take note!

Went for just one night, but have in fact booked again for next month. The room was on the seventh floor, and had an enormous bed, settee, and chairs. The bed was very comfy, we even had a choice of pillows! The restaurant was excellent, the food was excellent too. Parking was in public carpark right next to the hotel but was complimentary to hotel guests. Breakfast included, only cost £59 , bed and breakfast for two of us.Recommended!!!
