Owner description: At Jewry Wall Museum you can discover the archaeology of Leicester's past and find out about the people of Leicester from prehistoric times to the medieval period. A special display on the history of archaeology in Leicester, 'Archaeology and Endeavour' explains why our city has such rich and interesting museum collections and includes a stunning display of extremely rare medieval glass from Wygston's House. The museum grounds contain one of Leicester's most famous landmarks, the Jewry Wall, part of the Roman town's public baths. It is one of the tallest surviving pieces of Roman masonry in the country. The celebration of Leicester's Roman history continues inside the museum, with stunning collections including detailed mosaics, intricate painted wall plaster and a beautiful Roman cavalry helmet cheekpiece. Complementing our Roman archaeology collections, there are fascinating artefacts from other eras. From ancient stone tools to striking medieval decorated tiles from Leicester Abbey, there's something to interest the whole family.

“VERY INTERESTING MUSEUM”
Reviewed 20 March 2011

You could see the remains of the Roman baths from the road and although there was not an awful lot to see, there were some interesting placards with descriptions and facts on them. The only downfall was actually locating the entrance to the museum itself which is down steps from the main road, part of the college, to the left as you look at the ruins from the side of the church next to them. The museum has a very interesting collection and I thought the mosaics and wall paintings were really beautiful.

“Probably not worth a visit if you know anything about the Romans”
Reviewed 21 August 2010

We were quite disappointed with this museum. It was much smaller than we had thought, and didn't teach us anything new about British History-perhaps because we have been to similar places before. There is some interactive stuff that the kids will enjoy, such as putting on costumes, but mostly there is just a lot to read. There is some pottery, and flint, and things you have probably seen in 100 museums if you enjoy museums. I suggest you go to New Walk Museum instead.

“Friends, Romans, Countrymen!!”
Reviewed 30 August 2007

This was a lovely little museum with mosaics, figures and information about Leicester's past. Nice place to go with primary school age children as it brings history to life.

We could see the remains of the wall from the road and it was interesting for all of us.

It is free, but a donation is welcomed.
