“Fun for everyone, plus it's free!”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

This is a fun museum to visit if you are ever in Leicester. It is perfect for all ages and very informative. The staff is wonderful and really know what they're talking about. It really deserves more attention on the tourist charts, but then again it is like finding treasure as it is and I would hate for it to lose the quaint vibe. A lot of hard and loving work went into this museum and it more than deserves this 5 star rating.

I know there are so many places to choose from when deciding where to visit, but you can't go wrong here! I especially appreciate the fact that it is free. I hate spending £10 per person and then realizing it wasn't worth it. Then I feel like I have to stay longer to justify the money and I wasted precious time. Visit this museum and if you and your party aren't enjoying yourselves, there's no obligation to stay. However, I highly doubt you won't enjoy it :)

“It's a gas!”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

Enjoyed a really interesting few hours looking around this fantastic little museum in Leicester. Sure, it doesn't sound the most exciting day trip ever but I would thoroughly recommend a visit.

The museum collection is housed in the historic gatehouse building of the former Leicester Corporation Gas Works and boasts some incredible exhibits - there's even a gas hairdryer, a set of gas curling irons and a gas 'washing machine'! I imagine it's a real trip down memory lane for people who grew up in post World War 2 Britain. There's a mock up 1950's kitchen with loads of gas related devices and paraphernalia.

The museum illustrates the early days of gas when it was the brightest light of Victorian Britain and shows how gas made from coal lit the nation's streets, homes and factories. There's a neat little video that plays upon entry about this. It also delves into the enormous effort that converted the nation's gas appliances from town gas to natural gas found under the North Sea, piped nationwide as High Speed Gas.

Special thanks to curator, John Beckerson, who kindly opened the museum and gave me a brief tour around outside of the usual opening hours. He was really accommodating and even lit some of the lights for me to view!

The museum is run as a charity and some refurbishment work is taking longer than expected.
It is still closed as of today, 30th August 2012. I have spoken on the phone to the very apologetic curator who has said that the web site needs amending, but currently it cannot be due to the number of disparate parties involved.
The phone number on their website is current, so ensure that you phone first if you intend to go.

“Absolutely Amazing”

I have never learnt so much in all my life. The curator was so informed and so generous with his time it was unbelievable. No he was an anorak just someone who knew the museum incredibly well and didn't get fed up with my what on earth is this? questions time & time again... well worth a visit
