Having picked up a flyer at the Orange Tree, another establishment belonging to the Orange Group in Leicester, we decided to give The Pop Up Smokehouse a try on it's opening night. We had not booked but took a chance and arrived early. The welcome was excellent and we were accommodated without a problem. The first surprise was the enamelled tin plates on the table, reminiscent of 'gold rush' and childhood 'camping days'. We studied the simple menu and were impressed that the waiting staff had tasted all the dishes and were able to answer our questions about items on the menu in an informed manner. We chose two mains and two side dishes. The Pulled Pork was excellent and plenty of it. The Oxtail and Oysters was a terrific combination and a taste experience to savour. The only criticism would be that more of the fat could have been skimmed off the delicious juices, an essential task in the cooking of Oxtail. The side of Mash with Chives and Garlic could have been seasoned better but complimented the mains very well. All the dishes were also served in enamelware. By the time we finished, it was good to see so many tables occupied. It would, however, added to our enjoyment if the restaurant had been a little warmer.
Altogether, a good experience and a shame that this restaurant will only 'pop up' for a month.
