We were not sure what to expect but had we given it more thought we probably would not have been close. The Abbey is a long way from civilisation, midway along a long, windy and hilly road that had room for 1 car so good luck to anyone meeting traffic coming the other way. The reception was empty on our arrival in the afternoon but on the door outside there was a note next to a wall phone with a number to call should this happen, fortunately we were observant enough to see the note and managed to rouse a helpful person for what ended up being a quick and efficient check in. Positives: the room was a good size and clean, save for the large stain on the carpet; quiet; secluded; beautiful countryside with walking maps, 2 miles to 6 miles in length; trusting (there was a serve yourself approach to the bar + treats etc); view from the room was of sheep covered hills; good breakfast; plenty of opportunity for prayer. Negatives: very few and not really worth noting save that the meal times were very restricted (30 minutes for breakfast or lunch) ... so back to the civilisation point: no TV; no mobile connectivity; limited WiFi if you could find the password.

Room Tip: All rooms on the floor plan were of a good size and I would imagine with similar views.

Thank you for your review.

We are in a remote spot which makes us ideal for a peaceful retreat and time to reflect on God without the distractions of everyday life.

The road to us is a single lane but there are many passing places and this adds to the tranquillity of the Abbey.

Thank you
Ian Andrews

Launde abbey is a unique experience. The abbey is a charming place and very friendly. Meals are well priced and generous in size. Fantastic walks are on the doorstep and other guests stop to take an interest in you. We're not religious so we didn't visit in that capacity, we just enjoy the ambience and slower pace of life at launde.

Thank you for your review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon. There are some fantastic places to visit locally, including Rutland Water and the lovely market towns of Oakham and Uppingham, all of which are only a short drive away, so it's certainly worth a return visit.

We booked a 3 night stay at Launde Abbey in July 2013 for our wedding anniversary. On arrival we were told by a member of the staff (a snarly inhospitable man) NO! we have no rooms in the Abbey for you only in the Annexe. He didn't explain why and gave no apology. He turned us away with the offer of a refund and we were glad to go.
In all our travels we have never been treated in such a disgusting manner. He was not a peoples person and should not be dealing with the public and belongs in a field with the animals.

Thank you for your comments which were posted at the end of October 2013. Your booking was in August and with respects we dispute your version of events.

There was accommodation for you as booked in our Stable block which consists of 19 bedrooms. I understand that a member of your party was upset that we could not accommodate you in the Main House and refused even to look at the bedroom that was reserved for you.

At the time you were checking in there were other guests in the reception area and the person on reception acted in a professional and courteous way. Noting the distress of a member of your party and realising that you were not going to look at the bedroom reserved for you, a full refund was offered which was accepted.

If you would wish to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you
Ian Andrews

Multiple people before me have mentioned this, but this isn't a hotel, it's more of a retreat/lodging type place. It took me a few minutes to work out what was missing from the room, then I noticed, no TV! Equally no decent wifi. But if you are staying here, you're probably either at a wedding or some other event - in which case you shouldn't be faffing around on your phone/iPad.

I saw three of the rooms, varied in size/layout. They are all nice though. Ours had a massive window over looking the fields, the view is unspoilt. Plenty of teas, coffees etc. The bathroom was nice, seemed like one of the modular types as an add on, which meant it was modern and the shower was perfect.

The place itself is so quaint. Downstairs in reception the staff are attentive and friendly. There is quite a large selection of local produce, confectionery, biscuits which are all left in reception with a locked honest box. For quite a big place like this with effectively a bunch of strangers staying there I thought this was a really nice touch.

Breakfast was absolutely fine, all seemed good quality and in plentiful supply. I doubt I'll get to stay here again, but I would do without hesitation.

I have stayed at Launde abbey twice this year, and will be going back for a few nights in June next year. once as part of a group and the last time I was there in september was solo

The meals are tasty and plentiful
I have only ever stayed in the main house, the rooms are good, spotlessly clean and warm.

The lift in the main house is modern and suitable for wheelchair users but only goes up to the first floor
They have an honesty bar

Be aware this is not a hotel, the rooms are not serviced daily, their is ample tea and coffee supplies in the rooms,
the beds and pillows are oh so comfy, lovely views from your bedroom windows and if you are in the main house you are likely to see and hear the nearby sheep.

Launde abbey is set in beautiful grounds, with ample places to sit and enjoy the views

Wired wifi is available in your room, but elsewhere the signal is virtually zilch , mobile phone signal is non existent no matter what network you are on.

There's no TV or radio, but to be honest I didnt miss them

The prices are more than reasonable
The staff are very pleasant and willing to help

If you to get away from it all, this is definitely the place to stay or even visit for a day
