“A Lovely Hotel With Real Character”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2013

My son is considering the University of Lincoln and this lovely hotel gave him a very positive first impression. This was our first visit and it was great to find a hotel that blended in so well with the historic surroundings. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the relaxed ambience was a refreshing change from the clinical uneasiness you sometimes feel when staying in chain establishments. The hotel enjoys a prime location and the bars and restaurants around Bailgate are plentyful. The honesty bar is a lovely touch and it's great to be able to sit down and chat over a nightcap on the comfortable sofas when returning from an evening out. We didn't have time for breakfast but we did make the most of the coffee machine.
I would not hesitate to come back to Bail House and the charming staff and lovely location make for a really homely and welcoming stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in a two bedroom family suite and it was great value and full of character.

Hotel is quite anonymous from the street, but passing behind the big red door is like falling down the rabbit hole, lots of little surprises, but it's definitely a "marmite" - you'll either love it or hate it.. Hotel makes the most of its space carved out from a very old building. the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and overall it feels very cosy. The apartment was beautifully furnished and fitted with a fully functioning kitchen. secure car park was available. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious and served in the tea rooms connected to the Hotel. There is even a small outdoor swimming pool in their courtyard garden. The only down side for me was the mattress in apartment 3 was dreadful and I spent the night clinging to the sides to stop myself tumbling into the middle - if they are looking to change the mattresses can I suggest Dreams "Senator" contract mattress firm but very comfy (I did inform the front desk in the morning and they said they would have it replaced)., Also the Wi Fi was not accessible in our room. I would consider staying here again but I would think twice about the mattress.

Thank you for your review. First of all please allow me to apologise for the issues you experienced regarding the mattress in your apartment. Rest assured we investigated the matter after your departure and the mattress has now been replaced. We are very pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us in every other way and that you found our staff and facilities welcoming, friendly and comfortable. Our Tea Rooms staff will also be very happy to hear they left such a positive impression.

Please do come and visit us again soon, the cottage in which you stayed has a wonderfully relaxing view of the outdoor swimming pool in the summer time.

Kindest Regards

Great Hotel with lovely rooms. My Wife & I stayed in a room with a four poster bed. This was our second stay. Only gripe was thin curtains let in too much light. The light was on all night by the path to the car park. The breakfast (extra) was great.

The staff were friendly and helpful, I couldn't fault them. However, the room my wife and I stayed in was very disappointing.
At first instance, the heating hadn't been turned on prior to our arrival and so the room was freezing cold. Secondly the shower room and toilet was across the main hallway from the front door, meaning one risked an embarrassing encounter every time the loo was required. It was B&B standard for hotel prices.

Room Tip: Don't book room 9 or 10 - You'll have to cross the main hall to use the bathroom, which itse...

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. We are very pleased to hear your stay with us overall was enjoyable and you found our staff welcoming and courteous. We strive to provide excellent customer service at all times so we are very grateful when this is acknowledged.

Due to the historic nature and layout of the building these rooms do not lend themselves to having their own private bathrooms. While we understand this arrangement does not suit all we do ensure this information is communicated clearly to all guests upon booking and through our booking confirmations. We sincerely apologise for any problems you encountered upon arrival with regards to the heating system. The heating in the hotel remains on throughout the day and each room is provided with a thermostat control so that guests can regulate the temperature of their room individually. We do ensure a member of staff is available at all times to assist should there be any problems.
Thank you once again for your review and we do hope you will come and visit us again should you be returning to Lincoln.

I was getting married in Lincoln and so we booked a 2 bed cottage for two nights. The first night was for the bride as for us both on the second night.

Upon arrival we got 'upgraded' to a five bedroom mews house. The bride had plenty of room for 'the girls' to get ready and spread out their clothes etc. Also, it was easy to access and park for the photographer, make-up lady, guests etc.

The accomodation was very good - although a little tired in places. Plenty of room, wi-fi, TVs etc.

The staff were very, very friendly and very helpful.

The location is fantastic with views of the cathedral and right on the uphill part of Lincoln.

The hotel was easy to find and there was a secure carpark to the rear. Upon checking in the receptionist was pleasant and explained the workings of the honesty bar and the operation of the coffee machine. The room was large enough with an on suite bathroom that smelt as if a dead skunk had got caught behind the radiator. The bedding was clean apart from the occasional blood stains and the cupboard space was adequate. The bed was one of the creakiest I have encountered but comfy. The room was on the first floor and single glazed which made us think it would be noisy as the traffic passed on the cobbles outside but amazingly the noise was drowned by the squeeky bed / The building itself was very old infact medieval in parts with additions made in the later centuries. Visually the interior was pleasant with plaster removed to reveal the ancient walls behind with explanatory pictures hung on the wall. I would not stay there again myself but it was certainly an experience we will not forget. How unfortunate that such an historic building in the heart of such a historic city could not provide basic cleanliness. There can be no excuse.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear would be quieter as they would not face the busy road at the front.

Thank you for your review. I am very sorry to hear your stay with us was not a positive one; it is our aim to ensure guests leave us feeling relaxed and content and for you this was clearly not the case. First of all I would like to apologise for the problems you encountered with regards to our housekeeping team. We are aware the quirky nature of the Bail House does present its own unique characteristics however we do expect the cleanliness of the establishment to be unparalleled throughout. While we have never received any previous negative comments regarding the structure of our beds, this along with the other issues mentioned will be investigated thoroughly to ensure your experience will not be repeated. We are glad to hear you enjoyed our facilities however and found our reception staff welcoming.

The Bail House is a very old building full of character and history located perfectly for those wishing to experience Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter. We are lucky to be surrounded by an array of fantastic independent restaurants and pubs, for this reason the Bailgate can get a little noisy, we do hope this did not interfere with your stay too much. We do have a selection of rooms located at the rear of the hotel which overlook our Tea Rooms gardens, should you be returning to Lincoln we do hope you will give us another chance and sample one of these rooms.

Once again, please accept my most sincere apologies for the inconsistencies found during your stay, we do hope you will return so that we can change your mind and show you our usually faultless standard of service.

Kindest Regards

We went to the Lincoln Christmas market and stayed for one night. We had booked the four poster room however, there was a leak in the bedroom so we were moved to another very nice room. My partner paid for the room, said it was the most expensive room he had ever paid for which to be honest, I had stayed in just as lovely hotels at half the price. Perhaps the Christmas market price is elevated. I didn't like the little cafe, it was too small, the staff struggled to keep up, and compared to the hotel quality it was a bit of a let down. It felt like a greasy spoon cafe rather than an up market bed and breakfast dining room. Hotel staff were fantastic and safe enclosed parking within the hotel grounds. We actually stayed in December 2011.

Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear you experienced trouble with your room upon arrival, however I trust that an alternative room was found as quickly as possible for you and I am pleased to hear you found our rooms pleasant and to your liking. Lincoln Christmas Market certainly is a very busy time of year for us and due to the high demand for accommodation and our excellent proximity to the market rates do tend to be slightly higher at this time of year. Since your stay with us in 2011 we have given our adjoining Tea Rooms a fresh new look and implemented new procedures such as breakfast time slots to ensure waiting times during this busy time are kept to a minimum.

Thank you once again for your review and we hope that you will give us another chance should you return to Lincoln in the future.
