“Excellent weekend”
Reviewed 29 September 2013

Stayed at Damon's motel for my wedding anniversary on the 20th September 2013, had a lovely weekend, weather was good which made it much even better. Took a trip out to Lincoln, lower side of Lincoln was a bit scruffy, where as the higher side (near cathedral) was really nice and pleasant.

I had planned a birthday surprise for my partner, a meal in his favourite restaurant (reviewed separately) and an overnight stay in the Motel so we didn't have to drive.

On booking I was advised by the receptionist that the downstairs rooms had been recently refurbished, whereas the upstairs rooms were still awaiting a refurb. Naturally I booked the £88 refurbished room as this was, after all, a birthday treat for my partner. I was not made aware at any time during the booking process that the builders were still in residence; the room would overlook an overflowing skip; or that the pool, gym and sauna (a long time attraction for guests at Damons) had been completely removed. The website fails to mention these facts.

When we checked in the Receptionist was very welcoming and helpful. However, the temporary reception was in a cramped corridor with very tatty decoration and a carpet that was stained and in pieces and had clearly seen better days. When we opened the door to our room we were shocked to see that the decor of the room sold to me as 'recently refurbished' was identical to the one we had stayed in exactly 5 years earlier, except considerably more tired and shabby looking.

The bathroom was a prime example of this tired and shabby decor. The power shower was little more than a trickle and the pump squealed but gave no pressure. The seal around the shower screen was grubby and cracked and the tile grouting was discoloured, cracked and missing in places. The soap dispensers in the shower and near the basin were empty - it was a good job we had taken our own. The entire shower cubicle was stained with limescale and showering was not a pleasant experience. To add insult to injury the extractor fan refused to switch off. After being driven to distraction by the noise and unable to get to sleep, we complained to the receptionist who, after speaking on the telephone to the maintenance man, told us to turn off the isolator above the bathroom door. Obviously an ongoing issue which Damons are fully aware of. The washbasin was of such a shape and mounted on the top of the vanity shelf that, when you cleaned your teeth or filled the basin to shave, water splashed over the rim and soaked the vanity area. I was unaware of this issue until my cosmetics bag got wet through and the entire contents were spoiled.

The TV had a poor selection of channels - Freeview has no place at Damons. They obviously want you to pay extra for the movies.

It was an incrediby warm night and there was no air conditioning, so we opened the window. However, there was no means of securely locking the opened window which, as we were on the ground floor, gave us grave cause for concern, especially when we heard someone prowling outside at about 1.45am. We have to ask why the old wooden single glazed windows were not replaced with more secure modern ones when the ground floor rooms had been modernised and redecorated over 5 years ago?

Other reviewers have praised the beds - yes they are large, but two people cannot get past the end of the bed as the bed is so close to the dressing table. The pillows are lumpy, uncomfortable and we could not understand why there were 5 pillows between 2 people!

The following morning we made a coffee in the room. We had to empty away the contents of the kettle left from the previous occupant - obviously not checked by housekeeping prior to our visit. The tap water was undrinkable; surely it is not unreasonable to expect a bottle of mineral water in the room for drinking? We had to go the the on site petrol station to buy bottled water. There were only sufficient instant coffee sachets for one very weak drink each and my partner had to go to reception for more so we could have a second cup.

The final straw was the filthy carpet under the bed which I discovered when I dropped my hair brush on the floor whilst dressing. There was a thick layer of dust and a collection of rubbish which had obviously been there for some time. The housekeeping staff clearly don't move the bed when hoovering the room.

When we checked out we told the receptionist of our disappointment at the standard of the room. She advised us to put our complaints in an email, which we have done. The management response has been absolutely appalling. My first email was completely ignored by Mrs Foulston (senior manager/director) and the second was treated with complete disdain. To add insult to injury I then received a letter from Stuart Carey (CEO and Director) advising me that Damons were not prepared to discuss my complaint and were not going to answer any further correspondence - totally shocking and unnecessary.

We were loyal customers and my partner has used Damons Motel and restaurant countless times, spending several thousand pounds over 20 years. We have never had cause to complain before and we would have liked a refund on this occasion. Needless to say our visit in August 2013 will be our last. Standards have slipped in both the restaurant and motel and Damons no longer deserves high esteem and the good reputation it used to have. It is now an overpriced, over-rated, shabby and disappointing shadow of its former self.

Room Tip: Don't book at Damons. There are newer, better located hotels with more facilities around Lincoln...

We arrived at the motel to find a warm welcome from the lady on reception, our room was lovely all the things you would expect at a hotel/motel clean well equipped and the biggest bed I have ever had at a hotel. We went across in time for cocktails which were lovely and very reasonably priced the bar staff were all smart and polite, then we were shown to our table the service was excellent and the food was fantastic. We then returned to the bar for a night cap then retired to our room. We went for breakfast in the restaurant the next morning and again excellent service and huge portions of well cooked food. Value for money excellent would recommend it to anyone.

We have stayed here many times but it has been tired for a long time. At long last the Hotel is being remodelled.
The rooms are tastefully decorated in brown, for some reason, and the beds are comfortable.
The bathrooms are the star piece and are very good.
If you need an overnight stay Damons will do.
The staff are very helpful but there just aren't enough of them! We arrived on Friday and on Sunday, reception left a note to say that we were to collect a present at reception. It was a gift package left for us by friends, we received it ..two days late. On one occasion my door key wouldn't work and I went back to reception and waited for 10 minutes while the receptionist took a booking. Hire ore staff please.

Room Tip: Bigger rooms upstairs.

My husband and I decided to have a short break to celebrate our wedding anniversary and his birthday. Having been to Damons many years ago, and liking the Licoln area we went back.
Arriving on the Friday evening we had a swift booking in with the pleasant woman on reception and had no problems following her instructions to our room. The room was on the ground foolr and had been refurbished, modern walk in shower, comfy bed, good lighting, a little warm, the usual tea and coffee facilites, clean and fresh smelling. We treied to follow the instructions to get onto the motel wifi ( contacting reception for a code) to be told that you did not need to do that now, just go on to the motel website and logon, they need to update the motel information in the room. We had wanted to open the window when we went to bed but as we were on the ground floor and the windows did not have any sort of restricter on them, we felt that security wise it would not be a good idea.
Great black out curtains, poor water pressure means that the great looking shower failed to fulfil its potential, shame....Breakfast the next day, very helpful staff, so many of them too, OMG, 2 fried eggs, 4 sausages, 3 rashers of bacon, mushroom and spicy potatoes, toast, OJ and tea!!! Didn't need to eat again until 9pm!
After a very nice day in Lincoln and Newark, came back to our room to find it beautifully clean, BUT the window had been left wide open! Now we had taken any thing valuable with us, phones, iPad, handbag etc, but all our other belongings were in the room. I did feel quite cross that they had decided to put OUR belongings at risk.
Evening meal was exactly what it says on the tin, American Diner. Big helpings, ribs, turf and surf, fries, hot and fast arriving. I have seen on other reviewers comments about "the burly Bouncer" Yes, I did see him, but only noticed him as he had a security pass on - whats the problem? Yes, they did call our name out when our table was ready- I would suggest that if this is a problem for you that you go to a five star restaurant and pay twice as much for pretentious food.
A lovely weekend with my hubby, slept well, ate very well, very helpful staff, clean and a reasonable price.

Five of us spent a Friday night here before visiting Waddington Air Show. Friendly welcome from the lady on reception. Rooms were very clean and smartly furnished - everything looked new and had all we needed. Very good value at a reasonable price.
We didn't eat in the restaurant that evening but had an excellent breakfast the next morning - when we eventually got a table after quite a long wait. There were plenty available but it seemed a shortage of staff was the problem. Still, the food was good and our waiter, Tony, was a joy. Although very busy, he still found time for that extra special service that got us in a good mood for the day. Again, excellent value - large portions, low price.
