“Very nice, but missing that final touch of magic”
Reviewed 15 April 2014 via mobile

The owners have worked hard to make this wonderfully placed boutique hotel look and feel ultra modern and it is certainly very comfortable indeed. It's in the heart of old Lincoln and only a short walk from the Cathedral. But there's just something missing and it's that final touch of attitude. When we enquired about getting a drink at the bar after returning from work, we were told in very uncertain terms that they didn't have a licence to serve alcohol after 11, and anyhow, the bar closed at 10.45. This is a nonsense, of course hotels can serve alcohol to residents after the licensing hours. We couldn't be bothered to argue, they'd give three of us a late check out time which was appreciated. But the people on the desk need to smile more and look genuinely happy to be doing their job, because it's a lovely hotel and they should be pleased to work there!

We stayed for one night on a Saturday evening.
The location of the hotel is ideal for walking down the cobbled main street between the castle and cathedral, leading to the many shops, bars and restaurants.
The room was very clean, comfortable and nicely presented.

The bar was small and the drinks expensive, but there is a bar across the road that is much cheaper and the food looked very good.

The breakfast was excellent. Many options if you don't want the standard full English breakfast.

All in all an enjoyable stay and would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ideal location for visiting the Lincoln castle and cathedral.

My wife and I booked up for a night's stay in the newly acquired Cottage, we had stayed at The Castle twice before and had good experiences, but we shall not be doing so again.

The Receptionist accepted the booking and explained to me the cancellation policy, namely that as the reservation was for the following day, a cancellation would not be accepted. In fact it became evident the following morning that we would have to cancel.

The reason for the stop over was because we were to visit a very good friend of ours who is extremely ill with pancreatic cancer. We live in Cheltenham and Lincoln was a good half way point in order to break our journey. On the morning of the intended trip my wife woke up with a sore throat, and severe conjunctivitis. We immediately phoned a doctor friend of ours who told us that under no circumstances should we make the journey since any infection could be extremely serious and possibly fatal for our friend.

I phoned The Castle and spoke to the Duty Manager and fully explained why I had to cancel. I suggested that rather than a refund they simply hold the monies over until my wife was better and we could make the visit to our friend, which was likely to be within the next fortnight. This was flatly refused and the full amount for the room, which included breakfast, which I paid has been forfeited.

I have no wish to return to a hotel, which although small, is nevertheless unable to offer an alternative to its cancellation policy when it understands that the reasons are both genuine and extreme.

This is a fine dinning restaurant where the front of house staff have been trained to appreciate the importance of complimenting the fine creative work done in the kitchen. The Menu ( 28/03/14) was interesting , slightly different, not weird and included excellent but not excessive choices. Staff were well informed, polite, courteous and reactive to enquiries. The restaurant management and kitchen deserve real praise. It worked well and the pricing was sensible and appropriate. London restaurants could learn quite a lot from both kitchen and front of house staff.

Excellent location "uphill" so no need to negotiate Steep Hill every day to get to the cathedral and castle - just a couple of minutes away.
Really lovely food from "Reform Restaurant" - fantastic breakfast with great choice ranging from croissants / brioche to full english, omelette Arnold Bennett, and varieties of bacon / sausage sandwiches / eggs on toast, eggs benedict and also had great Sunday lunch too.
Lovely friendly staff who were always smiling and chatty and on hand.
Stayed in 203 - on top floor above restaurant - modern décor, great view of cathedral (bells not intrusive), nice bathroom with powerful hot shower, sometimes the mornings weren't very peaceful due to noise overflow from nearby rooms/bathrooms and some creaky pipes, but no huge issue - just as we were wanting a bit more of a lie in than usual!
Overall a great stay and were sad to leave - thank you.

Stayed just one night at the Castle at Lincoln in the Courtyard apartment. Glad that we did. Apartment was well equipped for self catering although we stayed b and b. Staff were excellent. Apartment was chilly on arrival but was soon sorted after request to staff. Apartment had dedicated parking for 2 cars which is a bonus. Parking in Lincoln can be difficult and the hotel Car Park is quite restricted. Breakfast in the Reform restaurant was well cooked and presented . All in all a very enjoyable stay and we would stay again
