“No Argey Bargey on the Brayford Barge”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

The Barge is what it says on the label, a moored boat on the Brayford Pool in Lincoln. The Brayford is a natural widening of the River Witham in the centre of Lincoln developed as a port by the Romans. They connected it to the River Trent by constructing the Foss Dyke. Nowadays it is flanked by a vibrant quayside of restaurants, moorings and Lincoln University.
The Barge is restaurant in a converted boat which has recently reopened and it is refurbished. Seating on 2 levels: above and below the waterline but completely water tight! The menu has an emphasis on fish dishes but there is a broad spectrum from Lincolnshire Duck to fresh Sea Bass with several vegetarian dishes. The food is tasty and good. We were a party of 8 and the service was very friendly and efficient. When there appeared to be some lull, the 'captain' would come and reassure us that all was in hand often with hilarious results. As we were celebrating a milestone birthday, we were all treated to a glass of bubbly with the compliments of the management.
I had Whitebait as a starter which was crisp and cooked to perfection rather like the cod with Cajun spices which followed as a main course. The fish was moist and tender with a lightly spiced sauce to enhance it.
We will definitely be going back

What a lovely place to sit and while away an hour or two. The food is good and reasonably priced. A good place for couples or groups of friends

“Safe value at this lockin”

A grubby mizzly day but the barge menu-prices drew us onboard. Good standard fare and lovely filling portions as well. The remarkable thing about this restaurant is the excellence of the food and the service for a very, very reasonable price.

“Poor experience! - I wouldn't bother!”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

We booked the restaurant at short notice (in the morning) and were looking forward to our dining experience throughout the day, knowing that the barge has been refurbished and had the "Grand Opening" a couple of nights before.
Upon our arrival I was a little disappointed to see that the outside looked quite dated... but that didn't really bother me, the table situation within the restaurant is not great, we were sat by the window but one of the chairs was what I'd describe as an "emergency chair", it was steel framed with stained cushions - this was swapped though with no issue - I would just remove this from the restaurant though as another couple came in and sat down only to have the discomfort we did of sitting on it.

The tables for 2 people on the barge are too small! You cannot fit all your food and drinks on them, we ordered mussels and due to the lack of space the finger bowl had to be brought to the table once we'd finished.
Every glass we were given to drink out of had dirty marks around the rim and lipstick. Despite swapping things did not improve.

There was a distinct smell of cigarette smoke within the restaurant - this turned out to be the chef and the waitress sat outside on the wall smoking - I assume it was the smell from the staff members when they came back on-board the barge rather than the smoke roaming back in.

Overall, I was quite disappointed with our experience, we will not be returning and would urge others to look around before opting to dine here.

I definitely would go again if I have the opportunity! I've been with friends to a birthday party there and the menu was pretty good (principal plate and dessert)!!! Nice staff, great food and gorgeous decoration!!! I highly recommend it :)
