The Barge is what it says on the label, a moored boat on the Brayford Pool in Lincoln. The Brayford is a natural widening of the River Witham in the centre of Lincoln developed as a port by the Romans. They connected it to the River Trent by constructing the Foss Dyke. Nowadays it is flanked by a vibrant quayside of restaurants, moorings and Lincoln University.
The Barge is restaurant in a converted boat which has recently reopened and it is refurbished. Seating on 2 levels: above and below the waterline but completely water tight! The menu has an emphasis on fish dishes but there is a broad spectrum from Lincolnshire Duck to fresh Sea Bass with several vegetarian dishes. The food is tasty and good. We were a party of 8 and the service was very friendly and efficient. When there appeared to be some lull, the 'captain' would come and reassure us that all was in hand often with hilarious results. As we were celebrating a milestone birthday, we were all treated to a glass of bubbly with the compliments of the management.
I had Whitebait as a starter which was crisp and cooked to perfection rather like the cod with Cajun spices which followed as a main course. The fish was moist and tender with a lightly spiced sauce to enhance it.
We will definitely be going back
