Owner description: At International Slavery Museum you'll find out about the millions of people, both in the past and today, who have been taken into slavery, in particular those who were part of the transatlantic slave trade between about 1500 and 1865. Liverpool was a major slaving port so it is fitting that the museum is in Liverpool. The museum is on the third floor of the Merseyside Maritime Museum building. Entry is free.

Same as the maritime museum - same exhibitions as they had a decade ago, sorely dissapointed. Must do better.

I've visited this place a number of times over the past 8 years, and some years ago they completely redid the gallery. This, in my opinion, was a great misfortune. The old gallery had a mock-up of the interior of an Atlantic slave ship, which really brought home the claustrophobic conditions. But they got rid of that, and now the museum has followed the depressing trend of dumbing-down that seems compulsory for UK museums (have they ever considered that some people over the age of 7 might actually want to visit, and be edified by the experience?). And, of course, there is a pretty hard-line modern political edge to the last gallery, culminating (inevitably) with a clip of Obama as US president....

Excellent museum with an excellent explanation of our involvement in that dreadful period of history.

There are so many stories told here about Liverpool, its trade and its people. So much can be learned if you have the time to spend. The building also has a good value cafe.

Although slaves never passed through Liverpool the wealth of the city was built on trading slaves. This museum is a credit by the way it tells the shocking story without pulling punch's
