Owner description: Sudley House has been described as a hidden gem. Tucked away in leafy suburbs, Sudley is the only house of a Victorian merchant that still has its original pictures, including works by Millais, Turner and Rossetti, and with beautiful period furniture, carpets and wallpaper it doesn't feel like a regular gallery. There is also a childhood room, a small world room and a costume room, which often house temporary displays, and tearooms. Admission is free.

A little hidden gem in Liverpool! I had a beautiful afternoon here with my 10 month old daughter (guard kindly stored my buggy so I could carry her around). The house is gorgeous and plenty of details and upstairs has the most lovely views and we loved the childrens 'nursery' with all the old fashioned toys. We have also been to 'pitter patter painters' which was amazing (the children were in a room covered with paper and pots of paints and could crawl, stand, walk in the paint - great fun!) Café is also great with the nicest coffee! Definitely would recommend x

Why has it taken us so long to go to this little gem ? A great visit full of great paintings and the interactive videos really good for all ages .Cafe good with a nice selection of sandwiches and very reasonable. If you live in Merseyside take the trip and if not well its a short bus or train from lime street .Enjoy !

Sudley House is in a quiet residential area & so doesn't get nearly as many visitors as places in the city centre. It's an old merchant's house with great art on the walls. When we visited the Turner paintings were absent. We discovered that they are on loan to the Lady Lever in Port Sunlight. If you have time, you could do what we did & visit both places. Highly recommended.

We've just got back from a visit to Sudley. We've been once before but went for the Tour advertised on the website today. Our guide (Simon?) was excellent. Rather than give an overview of the house (although he covered this as part of the tour) he focused in on areas that were of interest to us, mainly the decorative aspects of the building and the artworks. We learned so much of interest, plenty of things to look into back at home, we were entertained and informed for what seemed like an hour but was, in fact, two and a half....and all for free...Simon is obviously a great lover of art and of the house itself; I won't be so dismissive of Turner in future! Liverpool is lucky to have such a beautiful place, fabulous original works of art and interesting, keen and well-informed staff. Treasure them...our history and heritage are important.

We didn't get as far as the cafe, but then that wasn't what we went for. Toilet facilities were clean and well appointed and the house itself is well worth a visit. National Trust take note....you could learn a lot.

Many, many thanks.
D&D.

Certainly made to feel welcome by the friendly and helpful staff. Each of the rooms is full of all the information you need to enjoy it. Upstairs is notable for the views over the Mersey and exhibits to do with children and their toys in the past (dolls houses and metal toys). Downstairs there is a splendid range of paintings and drawings by famous names. Turner. Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Gainsborough. Holman Hunt. Sir Joshua Reynolds. Landseer. Corot. Superb craftsmanship too in some of the wooden floors and tiled fireplaces. Good coffee as well. A 15 minute walk from Aigburth train station, which is just 10 minutes from Liverpool Central. A truly delightful experience all round. We walked down to the Otterspool promenade afterwards.
