My wife wanted to see Tonight's the Night (Rod Stewart based musical), at the Liverpool Empire on Sat 1st Feb. So I started searching for a Hotel close by. I came up with the 3* Liner on Lord Nelson St. It ticked all the boxes, it was close, it had free parking, it did pre theatre dinner and a late bar. The only problem, it was 3* and an unknown quantity. We set off with minimal expectations.
On arrival I parked the car in the massive car park just up the street and checked in. First impressions were good polished brass and shining glass as befitting a real ship.In better weather there is an outdoor deck where you can sit and take a drink.
Our room was not massive but spotlessly clean, it had a king bed, flat screen TV, tea & coffee, bottled water, cup cakes and biscuits. The bathroom again not massive but spotless with no nasty odours, there were the usual toiletries nice soft towels and bathrobes. I had to remind myself this was only a 3* hotel.
The Hotel backs onto Liverpool Lime St station which is the only down side as rooms at the back suffer from a little noise from the station announcements.
We ate in the Hotel restaurant prior to going out, despite it being a very busy time the service was fast and efficient, we ate off the Pre-Theatre Menu which was very well priced, All the staff were very attentive and courteous. Later we had a couple of drinks in the public bar downstairs not realizing there was a large lounge bar for residents upstairs on the first floor.
After a good nights sleep we went down for breakfast, again it was very busy and we were directed into the afore said lounge to wait as there was not a table ready but we were called after
a couple of minutes, very professional. Breakfast had a good selection everything was freshly cooked and well topped up including toast, with the absence of the ubiquitous toast machine the queuing was down to a minimum. VERY WELL DONE.
I don't know who owns or manages the hotel but a lot of the larger chains could take a lesson from them.
Overall we had a great time. The staff were all very friendly, everywhere was well maintained and clean.
Liverpool is on the up with a vibrant atmosphere much better than one of its neighbours 25 miles away.
Isn't it great when your expectations are more than exceeded.
