The Lord Nelson Hotel
Ranked #56 of 98 Hotels in Liverpool
Reviewed 3 April 2011

I recently stayed here with 3 friends, on reading all of the reviews previously I was naturally worried about what it would be like, no need! The hotel was a good budget hotel, the rooms were fine, clean, not big but fine. Bathroom was big and no problem with showers or water etc. Staff are very friendly and there was a bar downstairs with pool tables and tv screens. The location of the hotel is superb, 200 yards from the train station and a short walk into the centre for bars, restaurants etc.

Whilst staying here I spoke to a lady called Jackie who turned out to be the new owner, she advised they have recently taken over and are in the process of upgrading everything, so far 2 floors have had all new beds. She was very friendly and seems intent on making the hotel a better place.

All in all I would say if you're looking for a reasonably priced place to stay in a great location then look no further.

Dont be fooled with the pictures of the hotel on trip advisor, it is in a bad state of repair, shower does not work, carpets dirty and smelly, breakfast very poor, staff were very friendly though. Keep well away from this dump.

The hotel was taken over on the 15th February 2011 therefore the new owners inherited a number of issues with regards to the maintenance of the building and how it was managed. The hotel has now been refurbished and is under new management.

This is probably the worst hotel that we've ever stayed in. Our room was dirty, with chewing gum on the floor. The showers didn't work and the brekfast was terrible, with sour milk. The hotel is loacted very near to the railway station and it is very noisy. The owner of the hotel was also very rude. It is a disgusting hotel.

At first glance, the building doesn't appear too bad - a little care worn, the neon signs fail to illuminate and it's in need of a lick of paint: Its close to Lime Street stn, within walking distance of the city centre and the university campus.
But then enter what is effectively a working man's hostel - somewhere to lay your head whilst you're contracting the week away.
Be under no illusion the place is run down, tired and down on its luck; it smells stale and this smell gets much worse once you set foot in the lift.

Accommodation is basic in the extreme - no wardrobe (just four hangers on a rack) two very worn out drawers and a single divan that has seen much better days; the room smells -like a mix of damp and staleness and this smell does not diminish with time.
The paintwork is jaded, akthough the ensuite was clean and looked resonably new.

Breakfast is not continental but COMPLIMENTARY - nowhere does it say continental in the hotel- it says COMPLIMENTARY. It's served in the bar area and consists of a choice of three cereals, toast, yogurt, fruit juice and tea/coffee. There are some complimentary tabloid newspapers. The "full English" costs an extra (whopping ) £8.95 per night.

Staff are friendly, but this friendliness cannot get away from the fact that this is a hostel rather than a hotel. Upon arrival you are handed a remote control for TV and asked to return it when you leave - as people take them apart or re-tune the TV to get Russian TV stations or simply break the remote controls.

Whatever you do - don't pay the advertised rate (£55 per night for a single room) there are much better local deals for that money - I paid £59 for the two nights and all said and done it was adaquate, but I would not rush back.

Can't for the life of me understand the good reviews - wonder do they refer to the same hotel. Turned down first room shown to us - the second wasn't much better. Floors not clean. Mould on shower. Rooms musky. Doubts about blankets. Asked for refund there and then so as we could leave and find other accomodation but they declined. But I do acknowledge that the staff were friendly

stopped here on the way to the airport, the room is very basic but clean, my room didn't have a tv but for £25 who's complaining.
The staff could not have been more helpful and breakfast was continental or for an extra charge full English.
the hotel is situated 300 yards from lime st station side entrance where the taxi rank is.

Nothing special. Receptionist was very friendly but the place does look a bit tired. It has clearly suffered from hen/stag/boozy/rowdy parties (I stayed there in the middle of the week). Single room was OK, I was more concerned my the multiple electric plugs loaded on one socket - not very safe. Close to Lime Street Station - excellent for the museums/Walker Art Gallery.
