I had the pleasure of staying at Elegant House for the grand total of ten whole weeks, while I worked on Foyle's War which was filming in Liverpool in the Spring months of 2014. I went to stay for two nights and liked it so much, I decided not to leave.
I think, perhaps, I can claim to be John's longest staying guest. During this time I find John to be charming (unerringly so), as are his beautiful stylish rooms, and as were his most delicious continental style breakfasts which he prepared with what can only be described as devotion. I witnessed his weekly delight in hunting-gathering the freshest and most original of ingredients from the phlethora of interesting markets and shops around, to bring home something exciting to prepare for his guests for breakfast.
John and Frances are not only lovely people, they are also extremely knowledgeable about the city and particularly about the arts. (I think it's fair to say that, as they have both lived in Liverpool for just about forever and have both worked for many years with various Arts projects.) Every room reflects their creativity. The rooms are stylish and comfortable.
EH is central enough that you can walk just about anywhere from there, but it is also very well served by public transport. It also has parking.
The best thing about EH (about from the conviviality of the hosts) were the other guests. During the week there were often one or two other (invariably stylish and interesting) business travellers, (one week we had a troupe of young actors) staying for a few weeks or days, but then the weekenders would stream in from all over the country, and indeed from all over the world. So many interesting people would pass through, of all ages and persuasions. They would gather around the long table downstairs in the kitchen and sit and swop life stories over breakfast, or just feel comfortable and well enough looked after to just sit.
Yep, I think that sums Elegant House up. John makes his guests feel comfortable and looked after. He and the beautiful Frances certainly looked after me. Thanks to you two lovelies!
