“A combination of Hip Hotel and Home from Home”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

I had the pleasure of staying at Elegant House for the grand total of ten whole weeks, while I worked on Foyle's War which was filming in Liverpool in the Spring months of 2014. I went to stay for two nights and liked it so much, I decided not to leave.
I think, perhaps, I can claim to be John's longest staying guest. During this time I find John to be charming (unerringly so), as are his beautiful stylish rooms, and as were his most delicious continental style breakfasts which he prepared with what can only be described as devotion. I witnessed his weekly delight in hunting-gathering the freshest and most original of ingredients from the phlethora of interesting markets and shops around, to bring home something exciting to prepare for his guests for breakfast.
John and Frances are not only lovely people, they are also extremely knowledgeable about the city and particularly about the arts. (I think it's fair to say that, as they have both lived in Liverpool for just about forever and have both worked for many years with various Arts projects.) Every room reflects their creativity. The rooms are stylish and comfortable.
EH is central enough that you can walk just about anywhere from there, but it is also very well served by public transport. It also has parking.
The best thing about EH (about from the conviviality of the hosts) were the other guests. During the week there were often one or two other (invariably stylish and interesting) business travellers, (one week we had a troupe of young actors) staying for a few weeks or days, but then the weekenders would stream in from all over the country, and indeed from all over the world. So many interesting people would pass through, of all ages and persuasions. They would gather around the long table downstairs in the kitchen and sit and swop life stories over breakfast, or just feel comfortable and well enough looked after to just sit.
Yep, I think that sums Elegant House up. John makes his guests feel comfortable and looked after. He and the beautiful Frances certainly looked after me. Thanks to you two lovelies!

Room Tip: I liked the big room at the front downstairs, but they are all great.

I stayed there for 4 nights in April 2014. I had a room with a private bathroom although the bathroom is seperate. i.e. You have to leave your room to go to the bathroom.
The place was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The breakfast is continental and John the host, makes a very tasteful breakfast. The location is great. There is a Tesco's near by if you need anything and there is also a bus route nearby so you can catch buses into the city centre. They run frequently.
John gave lots of advice on tourist spots and even gave me a short guided tour on Ringo's Starr's houses (he lived nearby as a youngster).
The price was reasonable and I would happily recommend it.

Stayed here recently for a gig at the Echo Arena and it was great. Much more of an experience than staying in your average B&B, and definitely more character than the chain hotels. A very grand and interesting area of Liverpool but close to the city centre, just over £4 by taxi although could walk on a nice day.

The owner has a few rooms elsewhere but don't panic if you end up in one unexpectedly; ours was amazing in a very lovely house. You return to the main house for breakfast. No fry up which was fine by us. Instead it was an experience in itself with great quality products (bread, meat, yoghurt, etc).

All of this plus a top bloke running the show. Good to see someone offering something just a bit different. Highly recommended, especially at the price.

As most reviews say, John is a great owner who owns a lovely house and looks after his guests every need and his breakfast was excellent. He is developing EH as he goes and at first sight we thought it looked a little like 'student' accommodation, yes the rooms are basic, but we had a good nights sleep, very quiet, and found it to be good value for money - we were going to a concert at the Arena and most hotels were double what we paid here, the taxi cost £4.50 each way. All in all we were more than happy.

After having spent two nights at the Elegant House, we only have gratitude words for John, his wife and the nicest guest, Rebecca. Thank you very much for your kindness, for your lovely breakfasts and for the "Beatles Tour".

You have made us feel at home.

Best wishes,

Verónica, Luís and Irene.

We decided at last minute to stay in the 'pool. We contacted Elegant House but they were full. We got a call back from John to say there was a room in the sister property round the corner. He met us and took us to a lovely place two minutes away. The room really was lovely and we had sole use of the shower room which was not ensuite. However - there was no tea/coffee making facilities or TV in the bedroom. We were instructed to return to EH for breakfast which we did. There was six of us sitting round a table which was very pleasant - however. Food and drink were in very short supply! John seemed to be rushing around doing stuff but producing very little from all his efforts. We had a few grains of muesli, half a cup of coffee and quarter glass of orange juice. There was little bits of toast and Italian bread - most of the cold cuts were finished. We were charged £95! On top of that - we were not warned that the liverpool half marathon would be going past the door (well done to all runners!) and we were therefore delayed in leaving by 45 mins. It's basic stuff that he got wrong. Look after your guests well and they will reward you with good reviews - take the p*** and you will get this. Btw - the house we did stay in is beautiful. Do your own breakfast, sort the wee incidentals in the room and you will have very happy customers!

i stayed here with a friend on 1 march. i was a little wary of the area, but this place is in a nice street near princes park full of well kept victorian town houses. the landlord john came out to meet us and directed my mate to park in his back yard (completely secure). the room had a single and double bed with fresh smelling clean warm bedding. the huge room was spotless as was the shower / toilet room. although this was not en suite it was adjacent to the bedroom. john was a font of local knowledge and via his hand made map we walked directly into the city centre. it was nice and quiet at night time and we both slept well. breakfast was a nice change from the usual fry up. john provided smoked salmon, parma ham, salami, boiled eggs, artisan breads and home made apple and berry preserve. the whole experience at elegant house was a real treat that was made by a guy who was a treat to get on with, and tried his best to make our short stay memorable.
