8 handpumps of well chosen and conditioned ales, plus always a good selection of malt whiskies (including some rare/expensive bottles)
Turn of the century decor dating back to the refurbishment carried out by Caines brewery upon their acquiring the property is largely intact, which as my title suggests makes this place a dying breed considering the Wetherspoons/carpets and chrome approach to pubs these days. Beautiful tilework and unique features give this pub character that is only added to by the atmosphere provided by varied clientel and helpful staff.
My most recent visit was made better by a platter of pork pie and cheese, laid on by the pub for all hands to enjoy, accompanied my pint of Purple Moose beer nicely.
Excellent!

5 of us arrived here on one of our party's recommendation for a pre-show beer - "it's the best pub in LIverpool" he said. An hour or so and 2 pints later we dragged ourselves away having half seriously debated the possibility of giving the show a miss. A cosy throwback to the Victorian era with splendid decorative tiles, woodwork and snug little alcoves, this is a place to settle down in. Lots of real ales, perfectly kept (we enjoyed both the Young's and Moorhouses bitter), friendly, knowledgeable staff and an eclectic bunch of locals enjoying their early evening meetings. A gem.

This has got to be one of if not the best real ale pub in Liverpool. Always a great choice with an excellent atmosphere in the pub. Their famous pork pies are a great accompaniment to the beer. well worth visiting if you like real ale.

I spent New Year's Eve in this spendid Grade 2-listed Victorian pub. One of Liverpool's most iconic pubs, it has to be viewed to appeciate the splendour of the cupola, the original wooden facade bar work, or thr Edwardian tiling. Not to mention 8 handpump bitters, over 80 single malt whiskys and a free champagne buffet, Happy New Year indeed.
