Comfortable bedroom good breakfast handy to car park, close to Beatles museum, close to maritime museum and Liverpool centre

Advisable to book a restaurant in the area as it gets very busy on Saturdays

I booked this hotel as a treat for my mum who was visiting from Spain. Our room was lovely with a powerful shower in a modern wetroom, massive comfy bed and modern decor. We had a small issue with the temperature on the shower, which was resolved swiftly and efficiently by Steve the maintenance man, who was very gracious when we discovered that we were turning the dial the wrong way!
This is a great hotel, based very centrally for shopping and nightlife.

Check in was painless and the staff were actually really friendly. As we were early, we could leave our bags at the hotel to return later.

Had twin room that was very clean, bathroom with bath and separate shower, tea and coffee making facilities, flat screen TV.

Returned in the wee small hours to the hotel bar, again the staff were really friendly and happy to help.

My only gripe is access - we decided to walk from Lime Street (about 1.5 miles). Access is either through a door way in the wall on the main road or round the back (river side) of the neighbouring Crowne Plaza hotel. This door is locked at some point so do not try to go through it or further along the wall late at night - we had to come back and round the Crowne Plaza.

I'm presuming there is a bit of cost cutting going on at MalMaison or staff training issues. Having enjoyed dining here a few months ago for Sunday Lunch we visited on 1/12/13. The dining room seemed to have three large groups in plus other tables of four and twos

Sunday lunch includes a buffet for starters then you order a main and dessert. All for £19.95.

From arriving to ordering took 25 minutes. The wine arrived eventually after we had finished our soup and were well into the buffet . One table of 20 was so close to the buffet as to make it impossible to pass other people there trying to load their plates whilst bumping into the backs of chairs which must have annoyed those diners.

The chef servicing the buffet ran in and out into the kitchen to leave it unmanned most of the time. We ended up going to a cutlery draw by our table and taking a knife to go back to the buffet to cut pâté and terrine. Nothing is labelled and with no chef there to advise its difficult to know what some things are!

The food is good when it arrives, we did wait 25 minutes for two scoops of ice cream in a dish to arrive with chocolate sauce. An order of two cokes took 15 minutes to arrive and three prompts to different waiting staff.

To be fair, the young guy in the restaurant- no name badges so I don't know his role- apologised when I complained and took off the wine, drinks and gave us a 20% discount on what was left- total cost £31 instead of £55 appx. The table behind us had a similar experience and were similarly about to complain, they had waited 10 minutes for a sauce and sent a steak frites back.

Service is friendly- they need training and are simply understaffed for what they are trying to do- they can't manage these big groups

Get your act together MalMaison !

From the moment we arrived the staff looked after us they were always pleasant when asking for anything very polite and eager to please.
The hotel was spotless the bedroom was brilliant very roomy a comfy bed and a walk in shower that was very powerful.
We had the choice of different breakfasts from cereal to full English as well as continental.
We would recommend this hotel to all as it's location is handy for shopping and site seeing being located on the dock side next to the cruise terminal.
