“30 James Street - Fabulous Hotel”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

We live in Liverpool but decided to treat ourselves and stay at this new hotel. The decor is amazing and the rooftop bar has fabulous views and attentive bar staff. The room we stayed in could sleep 4 people and the bathroom had a jacuzzi bath. All the staff from the cleaners to the reception and dining room staff were polite and helpful and always had a welcoming smile.

If you want a hotel that is central and has the wow factor this is it!

Hotel is ideally located for the Albert Dock (5 mins walk) and a short walk from the Liverpool One car park and surrounding shopping centre and Seel Street, Central Square etc. - they're all about 15 mins away.

When we arrived they hadn't a record of our booking at all, this was through Booking.com, but after 10 minutes waiting it was all sorted. Partly we had to wait as our phones were dead with the email receipt on it. Breakfast was pastries and toast as they were undergoing some work which I think we knew about before booking so was not bothered.

Room was fine and decor in keeping with the hotel, kind of a mixture of plush carpets, and some faux gilded picture frames and mirrors and generally in a black and grey colour scheme. We had a 'suite' - a double room with a wardrobe, desk, large LCD TV, comfy bed, clean linen and a decent bathroom. Whilst is was narrow, the width of a double bath, the bath had a jacuzzi which was really good. Sink could have done with some where to lay out toiletries.

My first gripe was the bar on the top floor. It looked nice and with a nice terrace over-looking the docks area. Having driven miles to get there I fancied an evening drink on the sunny terrace. It was about 7.30pm and we were told we had to book. The bar was spacious so it didn't look full, but we were told it was table-service so it might have been full. We booked for 11pm and came back as we were up early ish the next day. Nice drinks, although originally the server took the wrong order, and I had to get up to pay we were waiting so long when we'd finished. Our key-cards did not work and we had them re-charged. Mine had been next to my mobile so not sure if that did it.

We found the hotel had numerous stag and hen dos which, for us, was not great. 2am it started. We had a banging on the door so we told them to go away. Ten minutes later a banging again. We told them to go and phoned reception. Twenty minutes later and banging again. I got up and opened the door to be confronted with some drunk man. Phoned reception and complained and asked if we could be updated as to what happened. 3am - a (different) man opens the door and walks into the room!!!! At this point we should have called the police. Everyone I've told about this seemed surprised we didn't. We'd double-locked it, but the his key-card over-rode it: what's the point in the latch??? Did they charge his key-card??? How come it worked??? Called reception again and said this was getting out of hand, again asked for an update, and at no point did we get one. 5am - banging on the door and next door (twice). 7am - banging again, opened the door and again had to tell a drunk man to go away. There was even a door in the corridor that took a key-card so we should have been (although we didn't specify it) one of four or so other separate rooms.

On check out we mentioned it and the manager who had come on shift was aware of what had happened. Offered to ring us later that day (we asked for the next day as we would be out all day) and they rang in the evening and left a voicemail which we haven't yet responded to. The manager was apologetic, and said that she would find it unacceptable, and suggested we would be offered a discount off a future stay, which I felt wasn't really on - for us to get some recompense for our experience we have to give the hotel a chance to make some more money? I don't think so. Maybe we might be offered a reimbursement - we haven't chased it up since the voicemail.

So, an 'ok' hotel; decor not to my taste, but decent, good bar (but need to book), and some shoddy security. 3-4/5 without the issues.

Room Tip: Don't be booked into a room directly below or above a stag or hen do.

Booked as a birthday suprise for my other half. Hotel on sight is beautiful and very clean. We stayed on the 3rd floor called the Olympic floor with a turret room. Room was amazing with a views on the liver building and the docks. Cannot not fault hotel only slight problem is size of lifts quite small but other than that I highly recommend this hotel. Staff were so friendly and eager to help as we needed a fan for room to sleep and went out of their way to find us one.

Fantastic Hotel & Staff. Nothing was too much trouble for the Staff at this hotel, from the moment we stepped into the impressive foyer. Very welcoming, friendly and professional. Hotel fabulous it was my 50th birthday and I wanted something to remember! Well I certainly got that, rooms fantastic stayed in two suites on level 3 very comfy beds, large spa bath, lovely views over the river mersey. Rooftop Champagne Bar excellent, brought blankets to keep us warm, very attentive staff again, nice Champagne selection which we felt compelled to sample! Breakfast really good continental at the moment but still nice. Cant wait for the Spa to open, will definately return here when I visit Liverpool x

This is certainly different in a good way. The rooms are plush,(slightly over the top) very comfortable and very reasonably priced considering the fabulous location. We came to see the Giants and needed somewhere central so that my husband didn't need to walk too far. We chose here partly because of the historical connection with the Titanic and the White Star line, partly because it seemed to offer something completely different. and partly because of its great location opposite the docks. We were not disappointed.
We stayed in the Fleet Street Quarters which had two large ornate double beds, double jacuzzi and a small kitchen with every thing we needed for a comfortable stay. Our daughter was very impressed by the silver furniture, crystal chandeliers and velvet padded walls (Big Brother comes to mind but it was much nicer than that)
The Carpathia bar was fantastic and I would definitely recommend you book a table on one of the balcony's as the views are excellent.
There where a few minor things we could nit pick about but considering the Hotel is still a work in progress and the restaurant opened the evening after we left, I would more than recommend this brilliant individual hotel to anyone and everyone.

Room Tip: We were on the fifth floor and the views towards the Docks were great but I would of loved a room fa...
