The wonderful Haunch of Venison Gallery has put on a new face, one that actually looks onto New Bond Street rather than the entrance being onto the eponymous Yard from which it takes its name. A less than average size shop front, almost adjoing the entrance to Bonhams Auction Rooms, lets on to a receception and and then, tardis-like, to two spacious, bright andlofty galleries with a third on the upper floor.
These magnificent areas, hardly to be expected in this retail wonderland, are currently housing "The Mystery of Appearance" an exhibition of 10 great post-war artists including Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Patrick Caulfield and Euan Uglow, an artist whose works i have never seen before but are an absolute delight. There are only about 40 exhibits but most come from private collections so have not been on public display for many years.
And oh what a pleasure to be able to wander around an uncrowded gallery, enjoying the exhibits at your own pace, close up or from afar, whichever you choose, rather than pay serious money to admire the back of other people's heads at the current Hockney and Freud "Blockbuster" shows.
For me this exhibition is the hidden gem of the gallery season to date whilst the HoV Gallery is worthy of a visit even if nothing is on the walls.
