“Wish I could give it more”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

This is a great pub. It's got a lovely outside seating area, which is bathed in sun throughout those brilliant summer days. There's a good range of beers and they make a killer Bloody Mary. I would love to give this place five stars but I just can't because of the food. Sometimes it's good, in fact sometimes it's great, if you get lucky with the specials. However, the problem is with the main menu. It hasn't changed in years, is limited and rather boring, plus the dishes aren't really good for what they are. Also, there are times when the special dishes come out and they're just no good. Most recently I had the duck, which tasted like it had been deep fried and then left on the side for most of the day before being served up on my plate.

You should go here because it's a lovely pub and you might get lucky with the food - sometimes it really is really good. But it would be way better if you should go here because it's just brilliant, as it could be. A little frustrating but a cold beer in the sun on the benches out front helps make things better.

“good food stressed staff”
Reviewed 7 May 2014

There was 10 in our group. We booked for Sunday lunch. The place was extremely busy, yet drinks and food came quick and fast. Main meal was delicious and filling, no complaints there. Only down side was the stressed out male staff, who were so serious they could not muster up a smile. Paying a bill of over 200 pounds and having to look at poker faced staff is a bit off putting.
I don't expect a big false smile, but a pleasant expression would have done wonders. If you are local this is a great place for you. I came from quite a distance and would not consider travelling purely to eat there, but if I am in the area I would give it a second try.

Had a wonderful Sunday roast in this lovely pub. Its a popular place so you need to book if you are going to eat. Friendly atmosphere and great food. Love it.

“a mixed visit - food good, service is not”
Reviewed 2 February 2014

Ok, if you are in the neighbourhood and hungry or indeed there on a Monday night, then it is worth eating there. Really good value £11 for two courses and reasonable choice on Monday. It would be on the lower end of gastronomic pub standard. The service is poor though and inattentive, you feel as if the staff aren't listening and I had to wait a while for my main course. The men's toilets are disgusting and really gave me the creeps. So, don't go to the toilet. Order a main course and you will be ok, just.

“A lovely local”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

Moved to Herne Hill last year and am a huge fan of this pub, great grub, decent range of guest ales and they always make us, and more importantly (given it's opposite the park) our dogs, welcome.

Would recommend for a dinner or just a few cheeky beers.
