“Pleasant, quiet, welcoming and relaxing”
Reviewed 13 July 2014 via mobile

Searched and located on tripadvisor.com looking for cheapest hotel which was as reasonably close to central London as possible given the price.

This hotel is located about three minutes drive from Stratford tube station which is about 3/4 of an hour travel from Victoria tube station (where we were travelling from) by a taxi (if you don't fancy walking - which we didn't!). We used the Uber mobile android app (which I had pre-installed and configured on my smart phone) to order a taxi which arrived within about 8 minutes of us ordering it from the main road. The driver was friendly and his car was clean and spacious. The money for the taxi journey (he said about £6) was taken automatically from my credit card which I had registered with Uber. All in all a very pleasant experience.

I had pre-booked our room at Viking Hotel using getaroom.com for £57 per person per night. Stopped here for two nights. Checked in late at night. Staff was there to book us in. They asked for a paper booking slip from us but as we only had electronic confirmation they accepted our ID (passport) - you must bring one of these to check-in.

Got us to complete a small card with our particulars; name; address; etc.; told us times of breakfast (which is free) which were 0715 to 0915; and booking out time which is 0815 (times clearly displayed neatly on back reception wall); we were handed our key and a remote control unit for our room's TV and then we advanced to our room.

There was a small flight of stairs - about ten - to our room (no lift for the level - 4 - on which our room was allocated) but as we only had a relatively light suitcase and the stairs were few and we are young and fit we had no problems.

I should point out that we were not given a choice of which specific room (floor/ room number) we would like when we booked; had we booked a different type of room (based on price) I should imagine that in that case the lift may have been available. I suggest you check before you book if stairs are going to be an issue for you.

Up to this point the staff were very professional, perfunctual and helpful while the hotel was clean, spacious, well-organised and what you would normally expect from a hotel which welcomes its guests into an environment of comfort and ease.

Additionally we noted that although the hotel was fully booked... it was extremely quiet.

Our room was up the stairs and a left turn out onto an external balcony which was not too high and which looks out onto a courtyard beyond which are the buildings (houses, church etc.) of the surrounding suburbia. The room window had been opened so the room was nice and aired when we arrived.

The electrics are operated by inserting the card on the room key ring into a slot above the main light switch as you enter the room.

Our room was modern with magnolia walls and deep red carpet and curtains - no nets; teak effect matching furniture (which included a desk with three drawers; a tall cupboard with shelves; a wardrobe with an upper shelf and several fixed hangers; a wall-length headboard with sets of two drawers at either side of the double bed) - furniture was all fixed and pannelled... lovely.

En-suite bathroom was small but modern and sparkly new with marbelled tiles and stainless steel fittings including the sink mixer tap and towel radiator; toilet paper and clean towels as well as small complimentary soap bars were provided and waiting when we entered. Shower unit is sparkly clean and modern with full-length shower door. Electrics included light above mirror and main light overhead. A window above the dual flush toilet opens out onto an external courtyard... so very well aired. All in all a very pleasant and comfortable well thought out set up.

Electrics in the main room included lights above each side table; a main overhead light; a light above the main mirror (positioned above the desk); an oscillating fan (3 settings - mounted high on the walk facing the bed) and a wall-mounted, positionable TV tuned to a good range of satellite channels (we watched our favourite - The Food Network). A small electric kettle and hairdryer - both in excellent state of repair - were there in the room when we arrived (also a tray with two tea cups, water glasses, teabags, sugar sachets, milk pots and spoon). Also a continental style adapter was already plugged in and ready for use. As there were only four electrical outlets of which only one was available if you didn't want to unplug the power adapter, TV and kettle, then I would advise you bring an authorised power adapter strip with you.

The bed sheets were fresh and clean and the matress was fairly firm. We slept well despite our long journey.

We ordered pizzas from a nearby pizza takeaway (the local area seems amply supplied with restaurants) which we located using just-eat.co.uk. The food was reasonably priced and delivered to our hotel room door within 3/4 an hour after ordering.

So up until this point... very nice.

I arrived for breakfast at 0715. The breakfast area is well laid-out, airy light and spacious with chairs and tables arranged for about 60 people to be seated at once. At one end the breakfast things are available. Food includes several cereals in dispensers; choice of white and brown-enriched bread slices; yogurt in pots; fresh-type coffee from an urn; hot water from an urn (for tea); tea bags; milk and sugar; and boiled eggs. Everything is in place; and professional and well-presented kitchen staff are at hand to take your plates etc. to the kitchen.

The Viking Hotel - a warm and welcoming rest with modern, well-furnished, airy, clean rooms, ample parking space, and courteous, well dressed (smart), professional kitchen and reception staff.

For what you pay, you certainly get value for money. Highly recommended and we plan to book again.

Well done.

We stayed there for 4 nights with my friend, I've booked double bed for us but receptionist said that we can change for two single beds ;) room was small and tidy, water cooker was fixed with black tape and fan was bit broken too.. Breakfast was average with toast, eggs, marmelades, ham and cheese and cereals BUT youghurts were warm every morning :( coffee was quite good - can't start my day without it!

Evenings at the hotel were bit noisy and we smelled weed smoke (and found blunts) near our room.

Location was great, bus 86 went straight to Stratford bus station and bus 25 went there too.

It was nice that when we checked out we could leave our luggages to hotel and pick them up at afternoon when we headed to the airport.

Room Tip: Some rooms are located in inner yard where you have opportunity to smoke or park your car in front o...

Never stayed here before but if we were visiting East London again we would not look anywhere else. Staff were friendly, room was basic but comfortable. No bar but local supermarket down on your left. Local bus service from Stratford very good but stations for bus and trains are a short walk to the left. We did venture into London for a show, but to be honest it was a bit of a drag. A visit to the Stratford /Westfield centre is a must.

The staff (Indian guy- Night shift person - middle aged around 35 years) was very friendly, great command over English. He was helpful in finding the cheapest and easiest routes to London attractions. The hotel is very nice and clean great value for money. I arrived very late night almost 1.30 in the morning, the night shift Indian (aged about 30 to 35 years) receptionist helped me to find a restaurant to deliver food to my room in that late night, he gave me extra towels and he was very polite and humble. The hotel is in nice location near westfield shopping mall.
