Grosvenor House isn’t a ‘normal’ hotel but serves mainly as the dorm / hall of residence for the students of nearby LSE University. Out of term they make some of their rooms available to the general public.

The location is simply excellent: If you are a student at LSE staying at Grosvenor House you will be at your respective lecture theatre in less than 5 minutes. If you are a tourist you will be happy to hear that you’re basically in the middle of the West End’s theatre district. It’s also just a short walk on Long Acre street to Leicester Square, the center of London’s cinema land where the film premieres take place for example. Also, Grosvenor House is within easy walking distance to river Thames.

There are two tube stations that are both pretty close by: Covent Garden and Holborn stations both have access to the Piccadilly tube line with direct service to Heathrow airport. Holborn station in addition is also located on the Central line that gets you directly to Liverpool Street station where the trains to and from Stansted airport terminate.

The rooms all have kitchens and therefore you won’t find any restaurant or breakfast room at Grosvenor House. If you don’t like cooking you don’t have to worry as there are numerous pubs and restaurants nearby, try for example the Prince of Wales pub, located basically next door to Grosvenor House.

Though it’s a student hall of residence, it was pretty quiet at night and it was no problem getting some sleep. My room faced the Freemasons’ hall building by the way. They gave me an old key fob that didn’t work at the entrance door so I had to ring to get into Grosvenor House each time. Other guests had other room key fobs that could open the front door but they were not available for my room unfortunately and I thought that was a bit annoying.

The room was very spacious and came with a kitchen (incl. a fridge and a water kettle), a small bathroom (shower only, no bathtub), a table, a desk and a bed. Perfect for a student I guess. The kitchen utensils and overall the whole kitchen area looked scruffy I have to say unfortunately. I didn’t really fancy cooking there.

The bathroom looked clean at first sight but then the shower drain started to get clogged. I presume that hair from the previous guests were still inside the shower’s drainage system. If you want the towels to be changed you have to leave them on the bathroom floor. This usually worked well but on one day housekeeping hadn’t changed them despite having being placed on the floor.

The single bed was small and there was no bedside lamp. So to read in bed I took the lamp from the desk. Another negative point: There was no TV in the room. The room also had no air conditioning but as the road outside was quiet for most of the night it was possible to open the window to cool the room down a bit. By the way I saw there was an electric radiator to heat the room in winter. Wifi is available with an LSE student account as far as I know.

Cleanliness of the carpet, the walls etc. was OK, but certainly not perfect. The staff I met was all friendly and upbeat. Check-in and out was quick and easy, no complaints at all.

To sum things up: Grosvenor House is a very basic place in a fantastic location at a very good price.

We stayed at LSE Grosvenor house for one night whilst in London for the Olympics. £76 B&B right around the corner from Covent Garden is pretty good value anytime but during the Olympics it was fantastic value.

We arrived late (I called ahead to say we would be checking in very late in the evening) and were greeted by a friendly and helpful receptionist. These are halls of residence during term time but function just like an ordinary hotel during the holidays. The receptionist checked us in very quickly and made sure we understood how the key fob worked.

The room is very large for student halls and very large for a student's room but small for studio appartment. There is a double bed with nice clean linen, nice duvet and pillows but old/cheap mattress. Desk area, dining table and chairs and wardrobes. The kitchen is tiny - two hobs, microwave with grill function. There is cutlery/crockery/utensils etc but is is mismatched. Washing up liquid, sponge and tea towel provided. Tea and coffe provided.

The bathroom is a reasonable size, plenty of towels and sachets of shampoo.

The room showed the normal wear and tear expected of halls of residence (much nicer than mine were!) but not of a hotel, but I thought the price more than reflected this. The level of cleanliness was pretty high especially in the kitchen but there was a couple of hairs in the bathroom.

Check-out was very quick and they looked after a bag for us for the day.

We stayed at Grosvenor House 29/8 to 5/9/2011 as a base for our first week in London whilst on holidays from Australia. The location was superb, being both in the heart of the theatre district, close to Covent Garden excellent access to buses tube and surface rail stations. The staff were wonderful and the check in process extremely smooth. The room provided all we expected of a comfortable basic self contained unit. Also provided really good laundry facilities and easy access at all hours. If we are in London again we will not hesitate to stay there again.

Room Tip: We didn't really mind that we were on the Drury Lane frontage - it's all part of the hubbub of London!

On arrival the people on reception were very efficient & welcoming, this attitude continued throughout our stay. Location could not be better & although we had a first floor room looking onto Drury Lane we found the room to be surprisingly quiet. Overall the studio was adequately equipped, comfortable, and, spacious enough. General cleanliness was OK but it was obviously some time since the place had had a deep clean: Ingrained tide marks on the shower room floor. We would certainly stay here again.

I'm 65 wanted a long weekend in London Central and have used LSE before - High Holborn and Northumberland House - I chose Grosvenor House because it was en-suite with kitchen facilities. With the Strand and river 5 mins down the road and the British Museum and Covent Garden 5 mins up the road, plus so many Theatres on the doorstep - what more could anyone possibly want!!
