Description: Flagship restaurant to The Coal Shed & The Salt Room in Brighton, The Coal Shed London is now open at One Tower Bridge. Chef Dave Mothersill’s menu showcases a passion for cooking the very best sustainable fish and rare breed meats over coal. Daily specials boards offer choice cuts and whole fish to share, while showstopper desserts by Laura Petersen include ‘sweets’- – bringing a taste of the Brighton seaside to the banks of the Thames. Perfectly located for enjoying many of the capital’s best-known sights, The Coal Shed London is next to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, moments from The Shard, City Hall and HMS Belfast and walking distance to Tate Modern. They are also neighbours with the newly-opened Bridge Theatre and our pre-theatre menu is just £20 for two courses and £24 for three.

I’m going to sound like a food critic, so excuse but read on. It was Saturday evening and fully booked which is always good news. My partner had the Jacobs ladder, short rib beef,which was cooked to perfection. I had devilled Devon crab, basically Welsh rarebit with fresh crab topping, but that would be a dis-service to the chef and the dish. Each mouthful releases flavours in layers then a small blast of heat and then the sweet crab. Don’t let the description of blast of heat put you off it’s so delicate, but perfect. If you have ever heard a chef explain this experience then you realise what artists they are when you taste the results it’s magical.
We both can’t wait to to see if the sirloin steak we have ordered is up to this excellent standard. We needn’t have worried, medium rare cooked to perfection, and with the real taste of quality beef. It was one of those occasions, you didn’t want to end. Every mouthful a pure delight, add to that experience, chips cooked in beef dripping ( oh my grandma would be proud), why have we forgotten how to cook real chips.
I only have one gripe and that’s due to my age, I had hoped we’d got past wine lists that are excessive, it’s not the cost but why pay £60 for a bottle of wine that’s only worth £30.
The starters at £10 and a steak for £25, is exceptional value for this quality, the staff should be proud of being part of such a great team. Well done.
If you only have one opportunity to eat out in London get to the coal shed.
We have already booked to take business colleagues next week and will definitely be trying the sharing Sunday lunch, when we have a free Sunday.

Lovely restaurant hidden away on south side of river right by Tower Bridge. The welcome was warm and friendly, the atmosphere fun and the restaurant well setup with nice modern decor. The food standard was high, portion sizes generous and prices more than reasonable given the quality. We were looked after by Denis and Martin who did the restaurant/ company proud. We will definitely be back. Thanks

Pre-theatre lunch.
Pros:
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff
Good location for Bridge theatre/ Tower Bridge etc.
Food; excellent- seafood platter particularly recommended; calamari, and smoked/ varied flavoured mussels, clams, prawns, Langoustines, scallops, warm oysters, crab claws.
Starters a good choice.
Drinks - good range of alcoholic and soft.
Good atmosphere and decor
Cons;
None to speak of really, although be aware of directions: google won't send you to the right place, so best just to head for the Bridge Theatre and it's just around the corner.
