Met an old business colleague for lunch today at Hix which is the main restaurant in one of London's old world favorites - Brown's Hotel. I say old, but under the excellent stewardship of Rocco Forte this place has been transformed into a very trendy and cool place whilst keeping a great degree of class and indeed the charm of its historic prime. From the moment you enter the property you can sense that this place oozes service and the reception from the doorman through to the restaurant reception is genuinely first class - though actually under-stated in a very elegant sort of way.
The lunch menu is very British and indeed very traditional, but offers excellent choice. I had a tremendous prawn cocktail followed by perfectly cooked lamb chops with a very tasty tomato salad. My colleague had a lobster and tomato broth and what looked to be a perfectly carved slice of veal. A nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc on the side finished things off nicely as well.
Table service was knowledgeable and efficient and whilst this is posh, there is no arrogance or stuffiness.
Overall I like the atmosphere here, albeit it is not my normal sort of haunt. The prices are steep - and when you see them don't let it color your experience - and this is the only thing that stops me franking this lunch with five rather than the four stars above. In the words of Arnie though - I'll be back!
