“overall a good stay at the Bermondsey Square”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2013

My wife and I stayed here the last 2 nights of our vacation this past summer. Booked through Hotwire where you're taking a bit of a chance but went for it based on a good price for a 4 star hotel in the part of London we wanted.

Pros - walking distance to Tower of London/Tower Bridge, Globe Theater and Tate Modern museum. Our 2nd floor standard room was a good size with a large comfortable bed, fridge and huge shower. Staff was very friendly and helpful with directions and printing of online tickets and boarding passes. Continental breakfast was very nice with good selection of breads, cheeses, fruit, etc. Having the sainbury's store directly across the square was very handy for picking up drinks and snacks.

Cons - it's a 15 minute hike to the nearest tube station and knowing that in advance would have likely meant booking elsewhere (disadvantage of booking through Hotwire). A working fan in the bathroom would have been appreciated to reduce the great volumes of steam created by the shower. As others have mentioned the Apple TV was confusing, requiring a visit by a staff member to reboot the system and give us a lesson on its operation.

Overall a good stay but next time will probably book somewhere we know is closer to a tube station.

Dear Poolguy
Thank you for your review. You will be pleased to hear that we have now made the decision to replace the iMac TV's with regular 32" TV's in the New Year. It has been rather a Marmite situation. Some guests have loved them, other's not so. Hope you'll come again.

My husband and I stayed at The Bermondsey Square Hotel for a Saturday night when we were going to a party in London. We arrived about 4pm and we given one of the disabled rooms, overlooking the square. This was really nice as the room and bathroom were very large. The decoration was extremely good, and the disabled facilities (the pull cords and bathroom supports were discreet and it was lovely to have a big wet room shower.

My husband loved the Apple computer/TV/music system and the hotel got extra stars from me for providing fresh milk, a fridge, decaffinated coffee and conditioner!

The service was excellent, including the speed that items were sent to our room late in the evening and the continental breakfast was very good value with good croissants, brie and fresh fruit salad included. The full breakfasts also looked very tempting with everything cooked fresh and eggs benedict amongst the items on the menu.

Our only criticism was that the Daily Mail was the newspaper provided free outside every door. This may be offensive to some guests and is certainly a divisive choice. We would suggest a selection of free papers available in the reception rather than a tie-in with a single paper.

Room Tip: The disabled rooms are lovely and big with a large wetroom shower, without comprimising on decoratio...

Dear GreenPanda
Thanks for your review, sorry about our choice of paper. Monday to Saturday we include a complimentary copy of the i newspaper but as they do not have a Sunday edition we assumed that the Mail was well read even if its only the pictures in You magazine. A question of preference I guess.

Stayed here for 2 nights over the bank holiday and we were impressed. It's in a good location, being only about a 15 minute walk from London Bridge station and near to many good restaurants and bars. There is Gregg Wallace's steak restaurant downstairs but we didn't eat there, and we didn't have breakfast either. The staff were friendly, and when we had an issue because we wanted to pay on a different card to the one we'd reserved using, they sorted it out reasonably hassle free. We had a standard double room - it was a bit small but still plenty room to put your things out. Bed was comfy and the bathroom was great, huge shower. Everything was very clean. Overall a really good stay for our short break to London. Would stay again without hesitation.

Arrived at Reception to a bit of a problem with another Guest. One other person was sorting papers behind Reception but, on completion greeted, or attempted to greet the Guest behind me. Not a good start. The room was OK, not outstanding and on a par with a Premier Inn we stayed at earlier in the year in Tower Bridge Road. Staff were helpful, especially Eva, thank you. Small things leave this hotel behind. My biggest problem was, we had a room overlooking the Square that had a very loud concert going on during our first evening. The base from the music was over-powering and not conducive to getting an early night's rest, ready for our following day's trek round the area. No mention was made of this when we checked in.
Conclusion is, it's an OK hotel that's a bit rough round the edges.

Room Tip: When booking ask for a room facing the Shard NOT the square.

Dear Hampshire Roamer
I am sorry that we dropped the ball and didn't give you the welcome that we should have. In regards to the music, this was the first time that the Antiques Market which has now been operating for more than 150 years has tried to indroduce an evening market accompanied by a little Jazz. There are plans to repeat it again in December. I am sorry that it didn't please you and hope that this will not put you off returning to hotel again in the future

We had a lovely break at the Bermondsay Sq hotel the room was spotless, everything you need to hand iron and board, good hair dryer and fridge which is a plus as lots of hotels don't supply a fridge and was topped up with bottled water and the beds were too comfortable.
The staff were very friendly and accommodating a lovely lady on reception even charged our I phones with her adaptor.
Can't comment on the restaurant as we didn't eat there but what I seen looked good.
The hotel is a little walk to nearest tube station but it's a nice stroll, opposite the hotel is a sainsburys local which was handy and a few bars / restaurants in the square.
All in all a lovely 4 day break and would defo use hotel again. Thanks Bermondsay sq hotel:)

Room Tip: You can upgrade but we had a regular room and it was great

My partner had a very late notice trip to London organised and his company put us up here for two weeks. The whole staff at Bermondsey Square were fantastic. Always very helpful and happy to assist. I had a delivery while we were here and that was absolutely problem free thanks to the lovely girl who was on in the afternoon/evenings. The breakfast staff were also incredibly welcoming and happy to see us each morning. The bed was a major highlight as two weeks on something uncomfortable would have been a nightmare. The quilt made me feel like I was right at home as did the wonderful rainwater shower head. The TV was a mac computer screen with tv access and the hotel has keyboards for use with them. Wifi was free and exceptionally reliable. A gym would have been nice, though the hotel offers discounted memberships with a local one. The location was good, though it is at least a fifteen minute walk to Tower Bridge tube station. This was fine for us as we aren't shy of a walk on holiday but for others (especially with kids) this may be a concern. The local shops and restaurants are also wonderful in this area and easily accessible from the hotel. We saw lots of business people during our stay. My partner really enjoyed the hotel as a business visitor, but I think that the hotel is equally good for tourists on holiday. Not only would I recommend this hotel very highly, I would definitely return here on our next trip, regardless of the reason we were there. Overall a lovely experience and left a very positive impression of London on us both.

Dear Sneaky
Thank you for your wonderful review. I am so pleased that you had such an enjoyable stay. We have recently upgraded our wifi to 100mb so I am pleased that you noticed the difference. Perhaps the walk to London Bridge would have been a little shorter, but I hope the walk over Tower Bridge was enjoyable. Hope to see you again soon.
