Description: Since 2005, Marble Arch in central London has become a somewhat of a gastro-destination thanks to celeb chef Gary Rhodes W1 Brasserie (and its fine dining equivalent, W1 Restaurant). Located in the luxe Cumberland Hotel, chef and patron Gary Rhodes has created an appealing menu of modern European dishes, encompassing all that is good about French, Italian and British cuisines and British produce. You could start with a luscious charcuterie plate, then move on to a seasonal pasta dish and finish with a full-bodied British grill, or succulent roast chicken. Though that would mean missing out on dessert and, with tempting dishes like crme caramel and raspberry souffl on offer, and thats not something we would recommend. The Brasserie, like the Cumberland Hotel, boasts striking contemporary dcor, and its popularity and friendly professional staff ensure the atmosphere is always buzzy and welcoming.

“Average food, unimaginative.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2013

Fistly, there seems to be more thought put into the velvet encrusted mirrors and sparkly drop chandeliers than into the food (not a bad ambiance if you're into that sort of thing). Also this isn't a negative review, there's nothing particularly wrong with the food however it wasn't necessarily memorable or mindblowingly good.

AMBIANCE
A little too exhuberant for what you end up getting on your plate, note: mood lighting is a rather fun touch.

FOOD
A handful of friends and I went for a special occasion and all had the 5 course tasting menu for £49 excluding drinks. It ends up being 5 courses +2, with an added platter of cheese and bread amuse-bouches at the beginning and a deconstructed mini piña colada before dessert.
Of the 5 actual courses 1 was personally above average and wouldn't mind eating a full plate of: thinly sliced mackrel in broth with two edible flowers and a dumpling. Delicious. The other dishes were perfectly edible, yet I expected more fantasy, more taste and more passion on my plate. The gammon with quails egg and pineapple was tasty but forgetable, the lamb dish with caramelized onion and the soup were a little too rich for my liking (I don't mind eating out and tasting all that butter and good fat in my dishes, but some things aren't meant to be so creamy) and the lamb may have been cooked well yet all the fatty extra bits distracted from the course in front of me. Fat is good, but shouldn't do all the talking.

WINE
Extensive wine list, good value for your money.

SERVICE
Is what you expect from this restaurant. Polite, discreet and not intrusive. Sometimes they didn't finish explaining what was on the dish, but after asking they would kindly explain the different elements. Good team yet no one stood out particularly.

OVERALL
Good yet somewhat disappointing. There's better options out there in London for you.

“Very good service and ambience, but dishes that could be much improved!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2013

This restaurant is located in The Cumberland Hotel, which is a few minutes' walk from Marble Arch Tube station, off Oxford Street. This hotel has 3 bars and a sister brasserie to the restaurant.
The restaurant's ambience is very enjoyable, as the decor is opulent and the tables are well spaced.
Service is excellent. The waiters and waitresses are attentive, friendly and knowledgable. The wine list offers many choices that are very good value for money.
The food was good, but the creativity of the dishes is - unfortunately - not matched by their execution. The portion size of my main dish was the same as the starter. All the dishes were presented beautifully, but the flavours were not coming through.

“SPECIAL”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2013

we celebrated our wedding anniversary here with a special offer of the tasting menu at £49.
It was very good value with some superb flavours.
Once you have negotiated the awful Cumberland Hotel foyer, which has zero atmosphere and all the charm of a vast airport concourse, the restaurant is surprisingly small.
The decor is, er, odd and looks like a theatrical boudoir.
The service is superb, excellent restaurant manageress, a v good sommelier and very friendly waiters.
we loved the meal, the attention to detail and the relaxing atmosphere.
avoid tables for 2 on the banquette, one of is facing a blank wall.
