“Excellent coffee and cake”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2013

I have been into various Gails cafes and never been disappointed with the bread, drinks or cakes. I came here witha friend last week and was recommended the apple crumble cake which was a light pastry filled with grated apple and cinnamon and a crumble topping. My friend went for a small bite of chocolate brownie. The coffee and tea were excellent. I took away a Chelsea bun and this was also excellent.

“Wonderful artisan bread & decent breakfasts”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2013

Went here with an old friend for a catchup. Having lived in the area for over a decade I had never actually been in here, so was very impressed to find an excellent bakery and had a lovely breakfast here of croissant and jam, with some tasty tea.

I would definitely recommend this place - though it does get overly busy - those prams can be a real obstacle course!

“stick to making bread”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2013

after a number of attempts to find a decent breakfast down the Northcote Road we thought we would give Gails a go, especially as we have bought bread there. after queuing to place the order for ten minutes whilst waiting for Little Hugo and his mum/nanny Henrieta chose their muffin, we were issued with a stem with number 17 on it. Since there isn't a great deal of choice here we went for a banker in bacon, fried egg and toast (sourdough obviously) plus coffee and orange juice. Coffee came pretty quickly (very bitter) but without us realising the chap took the 17 stand. no 17 was then reissued to another punter. As a result when the waitress bought the orange juice she delivered it to another table. Since we were alert to this we were able to navigate past at least 8 pushchairs and reclaim said beverage. Good news was the juice was freshly squeezed and very tasty which enabled us to get rid of he bitter coffee taste. Some time later one of the breakfasts arrived. i let my son get started as by now he was running late for work. I wandered over to the cooking area to enquire about breakfast 2 and clearly it had not been started. Very pleasant lady doing the cooking assured me she would get it on. whilst there i asked for some ketchup and was given a pot with some stodgy dark brown stuff in. i asked whether
this wa in fact tomato ketchup but was assured that it was and it looked like that because it was not massed produced. Meanwhile a friend of mine came to join us and just wanted to order a coffee and toast. rather than taking the order there some bloke behind the counter grunted and pointed at a queue of people buying bread to take home which looked like it went back to Clapham Junction. after about 10 minutes his coffee came just before my breakfast arrived. I left most of it as the raw materials were very poor, particularly the bacon. i suspect it had been in the bottom of he freezer for some time. The best part of the breakfast was the strawberry jam masquerading as ketchup. Cost about £50 as well.

“Mouth watering Cookies and Cakes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2013

Everything I have had from here has been delicious from the raspberry & vanilla cupcakes to the cranberry and oat cookie to the carrot cake (made with pineapple). It is kinda pricey though so more of a place to drop by for the occasional treat. the only issue is that some of the stock is older than other so you may get caught out with something stale and not fresh, as HAS happened to be before.

“Eh”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2013

Gail's styles itself as tapas type of place, with guests encouraged to share small plates. The problem is that it's not priced as such. Plates cost £7-11. You're encouraged to order three per person.

The service was quick and friendly, but having spent over £20 per head on just food (no alcohol), we left oddly unsatisfied.
