“Nice room, rude front desk staff”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

When we come in reception none didn't meet us welcome... Rude reception staff, we arrive almost midd night... But morning staff shift was same- rude. Room and hotel are very nice, if u would like to stay in the room one hour longer be ready to pay extra 20£ .... I really love this hotel... But staff , they are really not trained enough...

Stayed in the hotel for 11 night. Enjoyed their excellent hospitality and promptly solving arising issues during our stay. Fabulous atmosphere, very friendly staff. Comfortable and easy to access the center of London.

The only real complaint we could make was that the English Breakfast was cold but we did inform reception of that on leaving. However, the hotel really wasn't to our taste and although it has some excellent features and facilities there are things that I don't think are right such as the lighting and over complication in some some facets but that is only our opinion. I also think that there needs to work on staff service to fully justify the five star rating. However, it's located by the Thames and not that far out from the centre by car . The restaurant food is over priced but discounted for those who stay and to be fair was very good.

We stayed at the Rafayel for a long weekend recently and I have to say this must be one of the best hotels in London! The rooms are spotless, the staff are friendly and the restaurant and bar are in a prefect setting serving excellent food.

We will definitely be returning soon. I thoroughly recommend this hotel.

A very strange experience for us. First of all - the rooms are cut into very weird shapes and there is very little lighting in the rooms, the hallways completely dark and sinister looking until you step into them and then a thin row of lights go on overhead. The same incredibly dim lighting is used inside the rooms too. I had to guess at putting on my makeup.

The hotel is located in Battersea, which, I gather, is very out of the way by the laughter we got from any Londoner we told we were staying there. There is a bus that stops in front of the hotel but no easy access to the trains or tube. The hotel does provide a free shuttle service at least - but only to Clapham Junction, and then only with a half hour notice. They were willing to pick you up from Clapham too with the free shuttle, but you had to call first - and I just never seemed to find a phone that worked (my cell didn't in London) and when a phone worked, I never had the right amount of change. After about six days we realized (duh) that the bus that stops by the hotel goes to and returns from Clapham Station! I wish they had told us that!

Ironically, it turned out to be best for us since we were forced to ride the trains and the buses (although we did get lost a few times) Train service, and bus service is phenomenal in London. We laughed at people running frantically to catch their train - because another one comes through in two minutes. What a luxury!

And the restaurant... well, that's outside in another building across a walkway and the meal deal is very confusing. One half price if both parties order two courses each. And I don't think there was any room service. We were there eight days and once the little cream packs in the fridge ran out I was out of luck - had to buy milk for my tea (horrors) Near the end of our stay I needed to do laundry which meant going to a launderette which in turn looked like it had been bombed or torched. Since we didn't know the area, we were going to take a cab but the desk clerk said it wasn't necessary, the shuttle driver would be glad to take us. He did. He also charged us ten pounds to drive what turned out to be four blocks.

Anyway, all in all it was a rather creepy experience. I expected Austin Powers to come jumping out at any given moment. The wallpaper is dark brown with big red flowers and there are posters of Marilyn Monroe and Jimi Hendrix everywhere. And one of the two elevators was broken the entire stay.

The bathroom was big and modern, but again, no lighting at all. Very creepy. I must commend the people at the desk, however. They were always willing to help if they could, and very pleasant.

Room Tip: I always decide by how great the bathroom looks - but I should have paid more attention to the peopl...

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review on Tripadvisor. While we appreciate your positive comments, we wish to clarify a few negative points in your review.

You have written about the shape of the rooms, . We are a small hotel and the building is designed in a kind of boomerang shape. Naturally, as a result of this, the design demands that the size of the rooms and corridors are spacious and of different shapes to maximise space. With regard to your comments on the lighting, we are an eco-friendly hotel and as such we have lighting that comes automatically when people approach the corridors so as to save energy. We live in an era where energy conservation is of the upmost importance. Unique Philips-designed lighting schemes with energy saving light bulbs are fitted 100% throughout the hotel.

As far as our location is concerned, we never fail to highlight that we are located in Battersea and guests who come to ‘Rafayel’ make an informed decision in choosing our hotel. We are surprised about your comments concerning the hotel being out of the way. From the profile given on your review, you are living in London yourself and made an informed decision to stay at the Rafayel. Battersea is one of the most upcoming areas in the whole of London, which can be seen by the numerous development projects currently taking place in the area. As you have quite rightly mentioned the hotel does provide a shuttle service to the closest train and tube stations every thirty minutes. We do mention to every guest upon check in that there is a bus which leaves directly outside the hotel going into the centre of town, however only mention this as an alternative to taking our complimentary shuttle service. The bus (170) stops right outside the hotel, which operates between Clapham Junction and Victoria and is a very convenient connection to Central London. In fact, most guests are surprised how easy and quick it is to get to Victoria from the hotel.

We are sorry to hear that your phone did not work in London, as the network connections are generally excellent around the Battersea/Clapham area.

‘Banyan on the Thames’ is one of the rare busy restaurants in Battersea. We regret that you found our restaurant menu confusing, as our staff are well trained to explain the menu and special offers in detail. Currently, It is a very simple offer of a 50% discount for a two course meal. We do have 24 hour room service in the hotel.

We check our mini-bars and replenish them daily. This is the norm in many hotel around the world, and it is a pity you did not contact our reception when you had run out of milk, as they would have been only too glad to send you more to the room.

Regarding the laundry, we do have a same day laundry service with the price lists and laundry bags kept in the wardrobe of every room. Our investigations reveal that you opted not to use our service due to lack of time and our receptionist therefore went out of his way to find the closest launderette for you and for a taxi driver to take you there. With regard to your allegation of £10 being charged for your taxi journey to the local launderette, it was never meant to be free and the driver confirms that he charged you £5 and not £10 as you have quoted, which is below the minimum charge for minicabs in London.

Just for your information, the paintings you comment on, displayed in our corridors are by a world famous French artist who has recently exhibited at none other than the ‘Venice Biennale’.

We are sorry that one of our lifts are currently out of service. Unfortunately it is a major repair requiring the motor to be replaced at a cost of over £10,000. The speed of delivery of the cargo is beyond our control but we expect it to be rectified within the next few days.

We are happy that you enjoyed the hospitality of our staff like the vast majority of our guests, who have commended them in this forum.

Thank you for staying with us and we look forward to welcoming you back to ‘Rafayel’ on another occasion.

Kind Regards
The Management

About a year ago I stayed a night with my boyfriend, arrived early so we could make the most of the evening, as soon as we got there we went straight to the spa and had a relaxing evening were we chilled in the jacuzzi.
We then went to dine at Banyon the restaurant downs stairs were the lighting was perfect over looking the Thames, and to top it all off the owner came to greet us personally as he said he saw us in the spa and wanted to introduce himself (wow) we had a chat and about half an hour later we received cocktails and a few hors d'oeuvres compliments of the owner.

Basically the hotel is gorgeous make sure you get a room with a view overlooking the Thames.

i really enjoyed myself i wouldn't second think going back at all

My wife and I stayed two nights at the hotel, everything from check in went very smoothly. We had a spacious room with views down the river that was well furnished and had a very comfortable bed. My wife enjoyed the spa and well equipped gym and attention to detail throughout was excellent. Our large 4x4 was parked for us in the secure underground car park and was ready for when we left . Lunch in the restaurant was excellent and had great views to the river. We met the owner who was lovely and very helpful who had great pride in his quality hotel. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Room Tip: Book a river view.
