Rafayel on the Left Bank - Hotel & Spa
Ranked #317 of 1,076 Hotels in London
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 June 2010

If i were visiting London only once, I would be disappointed if I chose this hotel because of it's location. It is probably great for birthday and weddding celebrations but not for tourists to London who may want to stoll around in the evening and enjoy one of London's "village" areas.

There are lots of nice touches to this hotel but it feels new and unco-ordinated. The bathroom was LOVELY and the room nicely decorated and very clean.

Valet parking - it's great to have parking under a London hotel and not pay extra but give plenty of warning when you want your car back. We asked for ours so we could load our bags and have a quick breakfast. It was suggested we leave our bags, have breakfast and the car would be ready when we were back. It wasn't.

Breakfast - was OK - fresh fruit, cereal, bread to toast. We ordered eggs but they didn't arrive.

The previous night's celebration debris was stacked up outside the windows and spoiled what should be a great location on the River.

Hoardes ( Ok - a bit of an exageration) of staff seemed to be hanging around the reception desk doing nothing in particular - this may be OK for Saturday staff in a high street sports shop but isn't in keeping with the rather nice fixtures and fittings and care that has been put into designing this hotel.

The bus service opposite the hotel is great - go left towards Sloane Square. The helipad on the other side of the hotel is a noisy nuisance, unless you are arriving by helicopter.

Positives:
-Rooms are nice, unique, easy to relax
-View is nice if available
-Restaurant food was very good (dinner), breakfast over priced and average
-The area is not touristy, which was refreshing, pubs and farmer's market close if you know where to look.
-Nice running/walking track next to the river

Negatives (constructive):
-Restaurant tries hard but is under staffed
-Would be nice to have a map of the area upon arrival
-No USA creature comforts like an iron, wash cloth, room service menu in the room
-Shower unique, but difficult to start and if you don't rotate the knob in the right direction you get a chest of cold water from the elegant sprayers. I did this each morning, and grew to love the wake up rush : )

Location:
About a 15 min walk to/from the Clapham station, easy after the first time. Note, the English are use to walking more than in the USA so get us to some walking

My husband took me to this hotel for my birthday and it was the most wonderful treat. It is a short cab ride away from Clapham junction but once you are there you won't want to leave the hotel anyway! The lobby is beautiful, with a florist and a cake shop, and check in was very efficient. Errol, who showed us to our room, was very welcoming and friendly. Our room!! We stayed in the Nile suite which was amazing: a luxurious jacuzzi bath, massive bathroom with twin sinks, massage/jet shower, living room area, 3 plasma screens. It was absolutely beautiful. There were also lovely chocolate brownies and a birthday card from the hotel for me which was such a thoughtful touch.
The owner was in the lobby when we were due to go to dinner and we actually ended up being invited to his son's wedding party that was happening at the hotel! This was so unexpected and very kind and we had a fantastic evening. The hotel offers such a personal service: the owner was in the lobby again next morning talking to guests.
Breakfast is lovely, relaxed buffet with full English breakfast plus continental options, overlooking the Thames.
The hotel also offers a free pick up to and from Clapham Junction which was great- driven in our own personal car after checking out!
Went to the spa for a facial- very good- lovely spa area- as you wander round the hotel everything is so beautifully finished and you won't want to leave!
Thank you to the hotel for such a lovely weekend!

I would like first to mention that the hotel rooms are nice and clean. But unfortunatly the room service , the free shuttle service , and TV are very poor, i noticed they dont have enough staff at the restaurant and i had to wait for ages to get thru to somebody on the phone in the restaurant and wait for 20 min to get a drop to the station. To be fair however on plus side, the staff are helpful and nice. I wonder whether they are hiring some models in that hotel but I'm extremely pleased to have been checked in by a so beautiful and posh young lady, I thought at the beginninh she was a model or AD subject, a so beautiful face to welcome you at the reception, interactive throughout the discussion versus to some receptionists who sound like an automatic tape, she lestenes more than she talks, she provides infos according to questions, she is among the prettiest faces I have ever seen in my life, she reminded me Catherine-zeta jones , but the former had a surgery... whereas the latter looks very naturel, She was so kind to take me to the room and she refused to take the tip, very striking beauty , I'm still wondering about the origine of that amazing beauty !! It's just wow, something special about that hotel .

This is one of the finest hotels I have ever stayed in. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the rooms are out of this world. I stayed with my wife and 2 young children and the staff couldn't do enough for us. It may not have a tube stop on the door step but the 170 bus runs past the front of the hotel every 5 minutes and that takes you to Victoria in 15 minutes. The continental breakfast is excellent value at £9.95. Don't hesitate in booking this hotel.

Okay, I was here as a corporate guest so it's very hard to make a judgement on value and service because I was being looked after ... but I just thought this was one of those 'trendy' hotels that doesn't quite make the grade.

Some examples: the wi-fi wasn't working and the receptionist said she would get back to me with a solution, but never did. The air-con was going full blast all night and proved impossible to turn off (odd for an eco-hotel). The room lighting is dim to the point of awful. You need extra instructions to work the shower etc etc.

My room was on the ground floor front and the laundry truck delivered at 3am ... then the bins were emptied at 6am .. you get the picture.

On the plus side: stunning views of the river, excellent food in the restaurant, good facilities. The hotel makes a virtue of its 'out of the way' location and it's great to see this bit of London being redeveloped but do bear the location in mind if you're booking here.

PS: the number 170 Bus from Victoria drops you outside the door and you don't have to brave Clapham Junction station

Rafayel, Guest Relations Manager at Rafayel on the Left Bank - Hotel & Spa, responded to this reviewResponded 15 June 2010

Dear guest,

Thank you for your review. We very much appreciate your comments and concerns, and would like to address them.

WiFi service is available throughout the hotel and is free of charge to our guests. We have one of the biggest upload/download (10 MB) facility. Your experience with the hotel’s WiFi must be one of those glitches that we deeply regret. Having said that, we are thoroughly investigating your complaint to avoid such type of unexpected occurrences in the future.

As far as the aircon going full blast is concerned, the system is operated on touch button controls. We have checked the issue and would like to explain that sometimes prior guests tend to ask temperature limits to be set which our Comms Room programs for them. The room you stayed in was one that was pre-programmed for higher cooling.

The room lighting is eco-friendly. We do not use 60-Watt fluorescent bulbs, but 7.5-Watt bulbs that give the same effect and impact, and hail from fifth-generation technology of Philips. As an eco friendly hotel, it is a part of our design concept. The very reason Rafayel is call 'trendy' (though achingly so in your case) is due to the fact that the lighting design is extraordinarily good. It’s just a question of interpretation. Philips Global is using the lighting design of our hotel as a showcase for economics of usage and functionality. As far as early-hour disturbances are concerned, we have issued six instructions to our various service providers to stop all laundry and bin collections from coming during early hours of the morning. We have taken due note of your complaints and will pursue our providers diligently to avoid such inconveniences to our guests.

We take pride in Battersea as our location and take great responsibility in elevating the area. We are the harbinger of change here and take great satisfaction in lifting up what is one of the finest and most beautiful part of the Thames. We are the sunny side of the river because of the angle at which our hotel sits on the river, overlooking Chelsea. Certainly we are not Chelsea, and that is why our prices are so reasonable for the kind of superior services we offer. We do value your comments on the transport links but we have always highlighted to our customers on our weakest links. No hotel has been as transparent on its website as we have been. We are also one of the very few hotels that will highlight comments such as yours on our site because we believe exposing our soft belly helps us to improve our services further. We believe that the transport links are good. The 170 Bus Service to and from Victoria are being picked up by others now; on the way you can be picked up from Sloane Square within 10-12 minutes (170 also takes you to Sloane Square in 10 minutes). Plus, depending on your pace, an 18-22 minutes’ walk will take you to the heart of King’s Road. What’s more is that we offer free shuttle to Clapham Commons which takes 7-8 minutes, from where the Northern Line takes you to Leicester Square and Bank in the City.

We appreciate your feedback and valuable comments. We continue to work hard in trying to excel in our services to meet customer satisfaction, and remain very mindful of our limitations. “Customer is king” is our motto and that is why we personalize our services.

Thank you very much. We look forward to your patronage in the future.

Kindest regards,
