“Probably the best pub in the area”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

Our studio is 5 minutes stroll from here. So that means we are regulars. But we also visit numerous other locations for sustenance and refreshment!

That said, this has become the firm favourite.

The food is great. The chips are exceptionally addictive. The fishcake & Poached Egg combo is delicious.

The beers are varied and many. The Wines well kept and flowing frequently.

Even fresh lemonade on the bar and one of the most expertly crafted Bloody Mary’s around (without going over the top with sherry and basil leaves)

It gets loud inside from 6.30—8.30 in the surrounding offices hubub. But often calms swiftly before and after.

The staff are LOVELY — very helpful and friendly.

You want a pub for a bit more of dinner than drinks? Go upstairs and you have a dedicated dining room at the top of a spiral staircase. It's lovely.

All in all... what a pub should be. Warm. Welcoming. Frequented by regulars and newbies alike. With good food and drinks.

No seating outside, but plenty of people standing around in groups chatting and laughing over a good drink. (and heating on one side for the chillier evening glug)

It's a really good pub — in the centre of the creative industries hottest area, Shoreditch.

“Just my sort of place, looking forward to going back in July”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

A real find in the neighbourhood. Everything is top notch - service enthusiastic and positive, interesting wine list, belllini and good real ale, menu evocative of trad british but with a twist - I never thought I'd have a scotch egg in a restaurant. Relaxed - no table cloth - room with few tables quite well spaced out up the cast iron spiral staircase from the bar below.

“Good English Fare”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

Shoreditch is the up & coming trendy neighborhood in London's East End, and despite the threadbare look of some parts, it is seeing lots of new, trendy watering holes and restaurants springing up there. The Princess of Shoreditch is one of them, and while not worth traveling across town, if you are in the St. Paul's or London City area and want a place to enjoy a pint or sample some Kentish lamb or pork belly (the new rave in the UK), then this place is worth checking out.

There are two levels: the upstairs dining room and the ground floor pub. I would recommend the latter, both for the more informal atmosphere and the people-watching possibilities (lots of attractive, young Londoners and few tourists). The fare is English posh: lamb with Yorkshire pudding and potatoes cooked in bacon fat, pork belly (more like slab bacon without the drying-out), or fresh fish. The portions are good and the dishes come with vegetables, though keep in mind the English like their veggies good & dead, so don't expect crispness.

They also like their beer served cool, so be prepared for that pint they've pulled for you to be far from the American preference of ice cold. The Pale Indian Ales (IPAs) are very good, and there are the usual mega-brews on tap (Carling, Guinness, Stella).

“Quiet pub lunch”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

Close to the train station but far enough from the noisy high street, it is truly a hidden gem. I loved the spiral staircase which led us to the upstairs dining area. The waiter was bubbly, and was patient enough to explain what a 'leg of lamb steak' was. I opted for the tasty 8oz Hereford beef burger with double dipped chips and pickles. It was delicious and REALLY filling so there was no chance of eating that intended dessert! Nice relaxed atmosphere and was able to have a good catch up lunch with a friend I hadn't seen for ages without having to talk loudly over the usual lunchtime din experienced at other pubs.
