It would be strange to be staying here and not know, as one previous reviewer apparently didn't, that this is the dress rehearsal - at reduced rates - for the official opening in May. Not everything is finished, it's true; not every element of service was perfect, it's true, but that's why it's open: so that they can learn how to make it right by the time the big day comes round. We forgave them everything for the enthusiasm and attention of the staff (who, on check-out, wanted to hear about the stay warts and all), for the stunning way the old building has been restored and for the quiet, dark, comfortable night's sleep. Food and drink over-priced, not all staff trained, not all public spaces open - but hey, you were one of the first to stay in this fantastic building and (what I guess will soon be a) top notch hotel.

I checked in for 3 nights on the 15th march, day 2 of the 'soft' opening. The hotel had 20 rooms open to guests and is due to open formally in May. I was totally aware that I would be one of the first to stay and expecting a mixed experience - I'm happy to say that it was a great experience!
My actual experience was very diffrent to the other review on the site, they must have worked really hard to address the teething problems from day 1. From check in to checkout the staff were friendly, always saying hello, offering help - great service if they can keep it going once the hotel is fully occupied.
The location is great, if you get offered a tour take the staff up on it as it is an amazing building. Yes, it is still a building site in places and there are workmen around but that wasnt a major problem to me.
My room was on the 3rd floor, it was a good size with a comfy bed, chaise lounge, table and chair. The bathroom had a large shower with zen cosmetics. I loved the number of plug sockets and the locations - usally one of my gripes, there was even one next to the bed to charge your phone! The decor maybe does at a stretch border on having a feel of the usual marriot or rennaisance chain but it is miles better than the average. I could hear the rumble of a train ever now and then, but not a major disturbance.
The bar was a good space and already had a nice vibe about it, I spent most of the time in the exec lounge which is the best that I have ever been in around the world - fantastic area and some real treats to eat and drink.
I have no doubt that when the hotel is totally finished and ready to open its doors then it will be one of the best hotels to stay at in London, especially for a special treat (I've no doubt that prices will probably dictate that!)

Arrived here on 14th March having been unaware when I booked that this would be the first day open. I had concerns before arriving and had telephoned the hotel three times to check on their readiness for guests, but could only get an answer machine. No-one responded to my messages.
Was grilled by security staff before I could even get into the hotel ( as were friends meeting me there later). Check in was friendly and efficient and we were taken to our 3rd floor Barlow wing room past the new ballroom/function room, ( a building site) and what I took to be a terrace (building site) to the third floor. Half of this floor was in darkness with just (I think) emergency lighting) and pictures on the floor. My bit was lit, but with workmen all over the place working on pipes etc with panels off the corridor walls.
The room - typical generic Marriott furniture - looked straight onto a wall (two metres or less away) and so was permanently dark and had no mobile phone reception in it. Facilities were not as advertised on the website. Instead of tea and coffe making there was just sugar. and when these were requested we got a message back apologising but they didn't have any yet. There was a minibar - still with it's internal packaging but nothing else, and although the website facilities quoted robes, there were none and when requested we were told that room didn't qualify for robes. The furniture was so arranged that you could not get to the chair to sit at the table. Not all the terrestrial TV channels worked - I didn't try the others. Much of the furniture still had remnants of packaging dust.
Feeling very disappointed we made our way to the bar - an impressive room - and asked what wines were available by the glass. There was no choice just one red, or one white. Because the restaurtant is - you've guessed it - still a building site we asked to see the menu for meals in the bar.We were shown a less than extensive menu, and then told that only some of it (but not which dishes) was available because they didn't have all their supplies yet. We sat with our wine and watched workmen installing some form of display cabinet behind the bar, and then retired back to our room to decide where else we could eat with our friends that evening, at which point all the alarms went off and the hotel was evacuated and we stood outside for appx. 20 minutes. For some reason I had lost my sense of humour at this stage and complained somewhat vociferously and was immediately offered complimentary access to their executive lounge that evening. Another disaster. When we went there was no one to greet us and so went into the nearest room, stood for five minutes or so and were then approached by a waiter who said we had to leave as there was a private function. He did not, as it turns out he should have done direct us to another area of the lounge. NB the private function was Marriott staff, obviously more important than guests.
We were then given free drinks for as long as we wanted in the bar which was much appreciated and in my case by then much needed. I believe all guests were given free drinks.
We ate elsewhere, and retired for the night. I was woken around 6 a.m. by the rumbling of underground trains. We had a complimentary breakfast and mine was awfull. Eggs Benedict served virtually stone cold and made with almost raw eggs.
We were on a special 50% rate which was still GBP179, and although some staff were excellent, the place is just nowhere near ready, and our room at a full rate would be appalling value.

My requests in the morning for a reduction in our rate fell on deaf ears, but I have been offered a room upgrade if I stay there again. Hmmm. Even when all the building work is completed the problems of noise from the Underground, the fact that the area is unpleasantly depressed and the chance of having another generic room facing a wall and with no mobile phone reception for about GBP356 room only means I will not be taking up their offer.
