The building, lobby and restaurant have been impeccably restored and are simply stunning. The location is perfect for Eurostar travel. However, the rooms are not up to the 5 stars (even by the lax London threshold) that the hotel has been awarded. The are small and very basic.
The staff at check-in and to replace a dead room key were attentive and efficient, although not particularly friendly. There is also a peculiar round of scrutiny when arriving back to the hotel late in the evening. I was asked at the main entrance if I am staying at the hotel. When I responded 'yes', the next instruction was to present my room key. My response each night was 'why ask me a question if you are not going to trust my response?' I wouldn't expect this impersonal, somewhat demeaning screening process from a 5 star hotel.More
