One can hardly appreciate the impact of this building and its occupants on the history of Europe. Here you have a medieval palace, a storied prison, a treasure-house, an armory all in one. The building is an amazing example of Norman architecture. That it houses the coronation regalia and displays the real items is such a point of national identity and pride. The new display for the jewels is much more effective than just gazing into the old vault. It provides much better angles for viewing which makes the interpretation so much richer. The side exhibits on coinage and torture are also fun. Don't miss taking a tour with one of the yeoman-warders ("Beefeaters"). They are well trained, very engaging and very knowledgable. They are also funny. You can also take a self guided tour with audio guides from the Tower Store just inside the main entrance. It is informative although we thought it could have been better done with more historical detail. It is definitely for general audience; not for someone who is beyond their first visit. The ticket is steep, about 20 pounds, but is a free feature if you have bought a LondonPass. It is reached by the Tower Hill metro stop and takes at least 2 1/2 and actually more like 4-5 hours to see thoroughly. Give yourself the time!
