“Great Family Option in London”
Reviewed 2 September 2011

We stayed here in mid-August, in one of the apartments. The apartment was lovely, spacious quiet and well-appointed. The free mini-bar, the comfortable beds and the kitchen facilities were all great. We stocked up on breakfast supplies at the nearby market and felt really at home throughout our three-night stay. The hotel staff was extremely professional and caring and the location could not be better, whether for walking in the parks or to the nearby sights. The reviews mention the great care that is taken with children here but also worth noting is the sophistication in all the hotel's facilities and services. This may not in the end be as economical as simply renting a flat but we left quite certain that we received great value, and we are sure we will stay here again.

Our family of four (2 adults and 2 daughters, ages 5 and 7) stayed at the Athenaeum for five nights this August (17th -21st and 23rd). We had the apartment suite, which while lovely in the photos is even more lovely in person. The service from arrival to departure was excellent. The concierge was helpful and charming, the front desk did all that they could to make sure we were comfortable. The three things that stood out most for us were the location, the spacious and beautiful accomodation, and the ease with which our holiday with the children went as a result of the hotel location and amenities. Whether it was feeding the birds with the kids or jogging in the early hours in Green Park - we felt like we were in our own beautiful neighbourhood - relaxing and enjoying our time, and so close to the various sights that we wanted to see. The rooms were fully supplied with everything we could need - scooters, helmets, kites, maps, ice cream and cookies(as well as a wide selection of adult beverages) all included with your room. We used the hotel nanny service two evenings so that we could go out for a meal in nearby Shepherd Market. The recommendations of the concierge as to restaurants and the excellent care given the children by the nanny made for a wonderful and worry free evening out. When we returned to the hotel for one further evening after travelling to Paris we were welcomed back to the hotel like old friends - it made it even harder to leave the next day!! We have stayed at some wonderful hotels in the past but I would not stay anywhere else with my children in London. We will definitely return.

We really enjoyed our 8-night stay at the Athenaeum Hotel during Christmas last year (a long overdue review, I know). We had a deluxe room which was very modern and spacious. I love the bed, it was so fluffy & comfortable that I slept very well during the entire stay (I usually have problems with hotel beds). The complimentary mini bar was a nice touch. The hotel staff were very friendly especially the doorman and bell captain. But contrary to some previous reviews, I did not find the concierge particularly friendly and helpful. We once asked him for restaurant recommendations but his attitude could be described as polite at best. The hotel was about 10 minutes' walk to Green Park Underground station, which would be perfectly ok in fine weather, but a bit weary in freezing cold winter. We found it much more convenient to use the bus - the bus stop was just a few steps from the Hotel. If you don't want to eat breakfast at the Hotel, head towards Shepherd's Market which is right behind the Hotel. We love Sofra, a Turkish restaurant, great food at very reasonable prices.
All in all, we like the Athenaeum very much and will certainly return should we visit London again.

I highly recommend this hotel. We rented an apartment for a week. It was beautiful, modern and clean. Yes, it was a little smallish, but it was much bigger than the hotel rooms. Small rooms in London are common. The kids' concierge made sure we had special gluten free treats and dairy free milk when we arrived. There were toys, video games, bird seed, kites and bikes for my kids to use. The staff was very accommodating and it was if they had known us forever. They always remembered our name. We arrived after an all night flight, and they let us borrow a hotel room to nap in before our apt. was ready. The location was amazing - right in the center of everything - clean and safe parks, the Palace, Picadilly, etc. The restaurant and the room service was the best I've ever had- we are gluten free and they made many meals and snacks for us. And the kids ate free! They had bread, pancakes, etc. A very special event for us was gluten free afternoon tea - with only one day's notice, an entire tray of gf sandwiches and another tray of gf cakes was prepared just for us. I didn't get sick once from cross contamination. We felt very special there. I can't express how much I loved it. I almost cried when we had to leave!!!

Room Tip: Just call and speak to one of the lovely staff members.

Where to begin? I now know that my expectations for the Atheneum were way too high, but based on reviews here and from Frommer's London with Kids I felt confident in this hotel going in. My complaints are both general in nature and specific, and in truth are too numerous to enumerate here, but I'll list a few.

First, we reserved one of the family apartments around the corner, which we thought was going to be nice and quiet. Very, very wrong. Aside from the street noise all night, each of the three mornings we were there the garbage truck arrived at 4:30am to collect the hotel garbage and recycling. The crashing of the refuse and the engine noise/backup beeping lasted 10-15 minutes.

Then the toilet in one of the bathrooms flushed with no discernable pattern: sometimes it was after 1 pressing of the lever, sometimes it took 3-5 presses, and sometimes it didn't flush at all.

Lastly, and most dishearteningly for a hotel which purports to be a family-centered hotel, the management unwisely booked a group of 50 young urban professional/business types who were given breakfast privileges from 7:00 to 8:30am each morning for 5 weeks. Everyone else who was not a part of this elite group was asked to wait it the bar area until they finished! Even latecomers from this group were given tables while others were forced to wait. After I complained (much to the embarrassment of my 3 kids) the maitre d' and front desk staff awoke from their dream that everything was going perfectly well as my family and at least 2 other small groups of hungry, paying hotel guests waited as the important businessmen and women came and went as they pleased. Needless to say, we ordered room service breakfast the next two mornings and enjoyed cold waffles and eggs in our rooms.

The bottom line on this place: they seem to think that having a children's concierge and a playroom with stuffed animals is all it takes to call a hotel "family friendly." It doesn't. They give off the feeling that they're in over their heads and not as on top of things as they should be.

Dear Sir,

I am very sorry to hear that your experience at the athenaeum did not meet your expectations. Guest feedback is very important to us so thank you for taking the time to share your review. We will do our very best to resolve the issues that you brought to our attention.

We have taken on board the feedback we actively seek from our guests and for the benefit of all moved the business group that you mentioned to our private dining facility in the morning. With regards to noise we actively work with the city council to ensure a later morning collection. We honestly welcome feedback and will always attempt to be proactive in solving any issues you may experience during your stay. We would greatly appreciate it if you could contact us directly so that we can ascertain which room you were staying in and to ensure these issues can be addressed.

We do hope that we will have the opportunity to change your mind and welcome you back to the athenaeum sometime in the future.

Just returned from a three night stay at the Athenaeum. I simply can not put into words how wonderful this hotel is. The staff is so sweet and wonderful, always happy to help in any way they can. The rooms were excellent(we had two adjoining for my DH and my teen daughters), beautifully decorated and most comfortable. My daughters loved coming back to the room each afternoon and finding the complementary milk and cookies. We adored feeding the birds in Green park using the complementary bird seed. My younger daughter loves the , yes complementary, yo-yo. This hotel truly caters to children. My two year old niece loved the childrens playroom and we did not stop hearing her enthusiastic requests to play in the the "Pooh room" (it is decorated in a Winnie the Pooh theme)
If you are thinking about the Athenaeum, do not hestitate!! It is the most fabulous hotel in all of London for families(and everyone else for that matter)

In July 2011, family of five stayed six nights in two adjoining rooms. The staff catered to my young children like you wouldn't believe. In-room DVDs and Wii games, popcorn, cookies and milk every night, games, complimentary mini-bar, etc. They really made us feel welcome.

It was very tough to find a hotel in London, with availability, that would accommodate a family of 5. We were about to give up when I called the Athenaeum. Cora (a manager) went the extra mile to find something that would work for us. I can't thank her enough - we probably wouldn't have made the trip without her help.

The concierges were great. Darren and Duncan arranged tickets and tours for us that were flawless. They were also helpful before our arrival, answering my many questions and arranging an airport transfer.

The hotel faces Green Park, is a block away from the original Hard Rock, and a short walk from Shepherd's Market, which is a nice area with pubs and restaurants. The Green Park underground station is a short walk, as is Buckingham Palace. We were within walking distance of Harrods, St. James Park, and Piccadilly Circus.

The level of service throughout the hotel is amazing. The entire staff bent over backwards to make sure our trip was pleasant. The doormen, bellmen, front desk and restaurant staff, were all all amazing. We didn't have a negative experience the entire stay.
