Situated in the heart of London the Athenaeum hotel is ideally situated for anyone keen to explore the famous London sights most of which can be reached by foot from here. Situated opposite Green Park (with Buckingham Palace on the opposite side of the park) it is a relatively modern hotel, not huge but well presented and with friendly staff eager to make you comfortable. Unlike many of the grander hotels (Dorchester, Ritz, Claridges, Savoy etc) afternoon tea is served in the Garden room which presents itself as a more intimate room with plush décor and large windows with a vertical garden outside, yes you read it correctly, it's one of the features when observing the hotel from the outside. There is a choice of teas, not a huge choice but well selected green, black and white (four of each I think). I chose an aromatic peach flavoured tea and my partner another white tea both of which were delicious. Decent sized sandwiches with pretty much the usual fillings (beef & horseradish, cream cheese and cucumber, egg and cress, smoked salmon etc) deliciously tasty and refilled as often as you wished were followed by warm home made scones plain or with orange "bits", different and very tasty indeed, presented with clotted cream, strawberry jam and the lightest, fluffiest lemon curd we'd ever tasted (yummy!). Then there are the small individual cakes; mini cheese cake (to die for), strawberry dipped in chocolate, mixed fruit mini tart and champagne jelly with cream topping (divine!)...then the cake trolly is hauled before you so if you have any room left you are invited to try a slice of fruit cake, Victoria sponge cake, lemon drizzle and a host of others (my partner Ian managed the fruit cake and the lemon drizzle both of which he thoroughly enjoyed and his main hobby is baking cakes!) I went for the Victoria sponge which was moist and had a layer of cream and strawberry through it; again utterly delicious. All that for just £29.50 a head was worth every single penny (you also have the options of Champagne for an extra £13)... and possibly vintage for another £20 but You'd have to check that out first..
Value for money 10/10
service 9.5/10
ambience 9.5/10
tea selection 9/10
food selection/quality 10/10
Thank you; we'll be back!

We stayed at the Athenaeum last weekend for one night for a theater break.

The service is excellent, staff are warm and friendly, the whole hotel, bar, toilets, rooms, restaurant are impressively spotless and comfortable.

The price of course if very high, but this is Mayfair, so top be expected.

The room again as expected was small, but efficient and well laid out with a very nice view of Green Park opposite.

The Breakfast was excellent, huge buffet or a hot menu that caters for all tastes, I had the full English which was delicious.

So, to the flaw, noise!!!!

After a long day we retired to bed at approx 11pm, just getting to sleep when our 'neighbor' returned to their room too. From that point on we could hear 'everything'; going on in their room, I am not exaggerating but i could hear the male gargling in the bathroom (and worse) and also his 'wife' who was making a call on her mobile, she must have had it on hands free because i could hear the dial tone and ringing until it was answered. Very disappointing.

So, as in all hotels, not all rooms are the same but this one was not enjoyable for sound dampening issues, other rooms in the hotel I am sure are fine, so would ultimately recommend this hotel as an excellent place to stay when visiting London.

Room tip: I think the room we stayed in was 806, but am not sure.

There is something very likeable about this hotel. It is cosy but still quite stylish. The muted lighting and dark furnishings are soothing. The staff are pleasant and keen to please. It's the kind of place you could relax and drink all evening, which I did. The whiskies are outstanding and the little whisky-cheese menus are an unusal and delicious diversion.

My room was a standard delux room. I upgraded from the standard just to be sure and I'm glad I did. The room and bathroom were light and quite airy, a feeling induced by clever and widespread use of mirrors.

The spa is tiny but cosy (and the gym is very tiny and a bit too poorly ventilated). My Ren facial was pleasant enough, but I had hoped for more cleansing. There was no steam or extraction. I suppose I should have chosen another kind.

There are some things the hotel could do a bit better. Many of the staff, were keen, are a little untrained and very young! Places like One Aldwych or Sofitel, Andaz or Firmdale Hotels are noticeably better at this.

The location is outstanding and the fact that this hotel is a bit homey and not at all stiff and yet also on Piccadilly, gives it some unique kind of charm. I can see why people return.

Room tip: Not Park-facing but street facing was still very ok on the fourth, delux room 411. Light and views down the street.

Stayed here for our last night in London and loved it. The nicest staff--special shout-out to Fabiano who was the best bellman ever--so charming, helpful, and darling. Also, the doorman whose name I have forgotten, but he is the tall chap with the long sideburns and is really the epitome of the perfect British hotel doorman. Have been to London several times but haven't stayed in this neighborhood before--loved it. Not too noisy, easy to get a cab from, and Trafalgar Square is about a 15 minute walk. The beds are comfortable and the lighting in the bathroom was great. Breakfast was divine.

I booked a VIP spa day for a friend's birthday. Great value, including all day use of spa, treatments, lunch with a bottle of champagne, chocolate coated strawberries and a gift voucher. Staff were really friendly and helpful. I've never really been into spas but have become a convert!
