“The Personal Touch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2014

In an age of on-line check-ins and electronic kiosks that dispense precoded room entry cards, the Savoy Hotel on The Strand in London is a haven for those who crave to be greeted personally (by name!) and treated like an important guest, even if only for a short while. The facilities are very much to stuff of legend, but in my view, the key to the Savoy experience is the utterly consistent and almost overwhelming sense of personal attention that is lavished on each guest. Other hotels may offer more modern hardware, infinity pools, or stadium sized entry foyers - these may appeal to some. The Savoy reminds its guest what it means to be human and have real human interaction.

Room Tip: Views of the Thames are available for those with unlimited funds or bucket lists...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review, the perfect arrival experience is our way of welcoming you to a home from home. Whilst the recent restoration brought the hotel in to the 21st century with the most up-to-date facilities and conveniences, The Savoy has long maintained an ethos of personal service, therefore your feedback is much appreciated. I look forward to sharing your review with the team and hope we are able to welcome you back soon.

Kind regards,

Fabulous facilities and warm friendly and welcoming staff. Made a special event extra special. Will use this hotel again and happy to recommend it highly. Easy access to theatre land and Covent Garden.

My husband and I stayed at The Savoy for 4 nights early this June just past, as part of a 8 week trip from Australia, paying over $700 per night without breakfast and without wifi.
It seemed as though we were staying at a overpriced hostel as there was NO HOSPITALITY at all.
There was a bad stain on the upholstered chair at the dresser so I let housekeeping know, they replaced it with a inferior chair, only to return the stained chair the next day still the same.
There also were bad stains on the bathroom walls.
There was no tea or coffee making facilities in the room or wifi. I enquired and was told it would cost 10 English pounds a day for wifi, which would equate to $80 Australian Dollars for our 4 day stay, OUTRAGOUS!

Room Tip: To overpriced, we paid for a upgrade and had the smallest view I could imagine.

Dear Guest,

I was so very sorry to read of your disappointment following your visit to The Savoy. Clearly we failed to meet your expectations in so many ways and this is such a shame as we really care about our guests and try our best to ensure they have a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

If I may first of all apologise for the incident with the furniture in your room. This is completely unacceptable and I have shared your comments with the Executive Housekeeper for her review. Tea and coffee making facilities are available upon request, please accept my apologies if this was not highlighted upon check-in. As for Wi-Fi, this is also available on a complimentary basis to Fairmont Presidents club members, which is also free to join and should have been offered to you during check-in.

You feel let down and this is understandable as you had expected more from us. Nevertheless, we welcome all comments both positive and negative as the opinions of our guests is so important and helps us to monitor and continue to improve the services we provide.
Thank you again for sharing your valuable comments and observations with us.

Kind regards,

Kiaran MacDonald

We stayed at the Savoy in June for our wedding anniversary and can say without any hesitation it exceeded all my expectations. The welcome was very nice and the way they handle you from the front door to your room is done with style and a degree of professionalism that other hotels can only dream of. The room was luxurious and well equipped. We also took the option of the cruise on the Thames on the hotels boat which I would thoroughly recommend. If you can afford to treat yourself then look no further than the Savoy.

It was my wife's wish (on her "bucket list" ) to stay at the Savoy so we stayed for her birthday. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left every moment was amazing. Upon arrival we had a gentleman ready to greet us and take us to our room. The room was lovely with everything you need. We ate at Kaspars restaurant in the evening and the food was just gorgeous.

Breakfast was lovely, and having cocktails in the American Bar is a must!!

David at front desk took the time to understand our needs and gave us recommendations of things to do, see and places to eat, which exactly suited our requirements. We travelled with a 2 year old and would recommend it.

On a big family trip we booked the Savoy as No.1 son is a stratosphere-level member of the Fairmont President's Club and could get us a good deal on rooms. Also he felt it was a great base for sightseeing. Mum would have preferred Knightsbridge, she thought, until she stayed at the Savoy and realised what a super location it is for almost everything. All three of our rooms - 228, 516, and 832, were beautiful. Rm. 516 was a junior suite, right next to the Royal Suite, with a spectacular view of the Thames - the London Eye, Big Ben, the gherkin, etc. and the other two spacious rooms had partial views of the Thames. By European standards, they are huge, and even by North American standards they are all more than ample size. Even if you are a lover of modern straight lines and neutrals, you can't help but appreciate the opulence, the beautiful details, and the grandeur of the Edwardian rooms and spaces at the hotel. (There are some nicely done Art Deco spaces and rooms as well) The location is amazing: a walk away from The National Gallery, Trafalgar and Picadilly, Covent Garden, Westminster Abbey, The Courtauld Museum, the Borough Market, St. Paul's, the Tower... There's lots of shopping in Covent Garden, and a few minutes further to Bond St.. Restaurants abound witihng a few minutes. After one ridiculously-priced breakfast in the beautiful Thames Foyer, we went out the other mornings and had no trouble finding a cheap and tasty alternative. The service is utterly superb. The concierge is most helpful at getting restaurant reservations to places you might not have been able to book online. And of course you are only minutes away from the massive theatre district and dozens of options for your evening's entertainment. I have only one tiny quibble: No full-length mirror in our room. There are no coffee makers in the rooms but I - a morning coffee addict - didn't mind; I just threw on some clothes and walked a block down the Strand to Starbucks, or Caffe Nero. It got the blood moving! (The weather was lovely, though. Perhaps I would have felt differently if it had been cold and rainy.) Rooms come with most anything else you might want - a bar fridge, hair dryer, dressing gowns, slippers, clock radio, digital tv ( our had speakers in the bathroom!) and even an electric plug converter if you forgot one. The AC was unobtrusive and efficient. This was probably a once in a lifetime splurge for us, but if my husband and I ever travel to London again, we'll think hard about going back to the Savoy.

Room Tip: Check the birdseye view on Google earth. Courtyard room are super quiet but there's little to s...
