It's not until you board the gunnery deck and watch the excellent demonstration that the true insanity of Elizabeth seamanship strikes home. Ably assisted by a young lad in the audience, our guide gave a spellbinding demonstration of gunnery at sea, and afterwards was delighted to talk about the whole history of the original boat as well as detailing the conditions of life at sea. Utterly fascinating, and in the three foot high deck (I'm six five so if your knees are as unsteady as mine, sit on the cannons rather than the floor) as compelling as any performance in the round.
While the gunnery demonstration is certainly worth waiting for, the Golden Hinde is a compact but magnificent little attraction, with a unique and rather charming view of London. Its just a shame Mondial House is no longer in the background, as standing on the deck one is surrounded by visible signs of nearly a thousand years of English history in a single dizzying turn.
As a side note, this is also the ship used in the Richard Chamberlain series 'Shogun' which was the final little bonus for me. Enjoy, it deserves your time.
