An on-site EPL Match had always been on my Bucket List but when you try to get tickets for an early season home game with the reigning European Champions it becomes an almost impossible task. Fortunately the Millenium and Copthorne people came to the rescue with a Match Day Dining Package.
I fully expected lunch to be roast beef and three veg but didn't care because it came with match tickets! As it turned out lunch was great - no roast beef and no veg and a sensible selection of options with reasonable back-up on the wine list. My wife and I arrived soaked to the skin courtesy of an unseasonal thunderstorm but this didn't trouble the restaurant team who didn't mind us dripping all over their fine dining furniture - in fact I think that we were something of a novelty! The bottle of wine that accompanied the meal was not left on the table and according to my accounting we consumed way more than a bottle as we dried out.
I was concerned that we might have lousy seats at the ground but we had seats 4 rows back on the 18 yard line and had a great view of the game. The atmosphere is predictably electric and we were surrounded by vocal locals who appreciated the added volume of support.
The experience is not cheap - but it's about the same as I expected to pay for a couple of scalped tickets - lunch was free!!
Don't miss the opportunity!! Chelsea 2 Newcastle United 0!!
