“A truly romantic hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2013

We stayed in the victorian four poster bed room. Wow what a room, just beautiful. The whole place has such a lovely feel to it. Its romantic, classy and decadent.
It was my birthday when we stayed and we had lunch at their sister company "julies restaurant" when we arrived, the lady that worked at the hotel paid for a glass of champagne for us as it was my birthday. A lovely genuine touch. A wonderful weekend inc the restaurant which was out of this world. Really love this hotel and would stay again!. Lovely breakfast, good service, clean and comfortable.

Great location in a quiet street and free parking after midday on Saturday. A one-night stay whilst attending a function locally this hotel is quirky but tired. First the poor stuff: The hotel needs some decoration as everything is looking tired. The balcony rail is rusty and peeling and the hotel needs a new concierge arrangement as the lobby was literally filled with other guests bags when we arrived. A bit of friendliness from the reception staff wouldn't go amiss either - no offer to help with bags just "here's the key and there is the lift!". Ok. Room service was apparently 'no problem' except that it arrived with only half the order. We weren't charged for the missing half at least. Although the bath is a centre piece the closet sized shower looks like it was reclaimed from a 1970's council make-over.

The room was great. The round bed doesn't quite fit in the middle of the room but was extremely comfortable and the bizarre Victorian bath was a ral talking point. Very large and very deep for multiple bathing if you wish! It's worth a night but I probably wouldn't stay here again until it was refurbished.

Room Tip: Room 16 with the round bed, view over the park and very quirky bath!

We just concluded our stay at the Portobello hotel yesterday. We were concerned after reading the reviews about the laptop that had gone missing. So sorry to hear of this guys misfortune with his laptop but we had no problems at all with security. The staff was great. They were friendly, hip, out going and very helpful. We left our Ipad and my new MacBook Air in the room all day long while we were out each day. Nothing in our room went missing.
If you are looking for a sterile mass marketed environment as in a Hilton or Sheraton this might not be the place for you. We chose this hotel for the quirky, elegant and charming environment that it offers. The real antiques and tasteful decor added to the cozy ambience. The location couldn't be better for us and the Portobello Road Market. We will definitely return. We wish to thank the staff for being so helpful.

Room Tip: Room 16 was charming with a great view of the park.

I am amazed hotel management have not responded to the latest review nearly 2 weeks after it was posted. I sympathize with the poster and hope all turns out well, but it says something about the vigilance of hotel management that they don't care or are still unaware how important these reviews are to their business.

This is a very nice boutique hotel, in a great location very near to Portobello road, but still very private and quiet.
It may be a little old but that adds to its character, and possibly a little overpriced, but all in all it was perfect for our romantic night in London, and we would probably book here again.

A perfect place if you want a private but central location. Ideally situated near Portobello Road and Kensington High Street. Rooms imaginatively decorated Hiving a sense of decadence and calm ...lots of interesting items including roll top baths, circular beds. I love the idea you can open your balcony doors and still have complete privacy offeted by the trees beyond. It's a pity there didn't seem to be access to the park beyond. For a hotel of its reputation the things you normally cast a fleeting glance at eg sockets, curtain rails, wooden blinds etc all seemed a bit worn. Not that I mind this at all but it didn't reflect the price paid. That said I would definitely visit again for the seclusion and fab location next to the huddle and bustle.

I took my wife here for our 15th wedding anniversary. We got what we expected, total privacy, but attention when we needed.
If you want a Hotel as a base to explore or for Business don't go.
If you want total romance and intimacy, with privacy, then this is the Hotel for you.
Reception staff were brilliant, room service good, although he couldn't carry all our order in one go!
Stayed in room 16, I would not advise this room, purely on the basis that we want to stay there again, and don't want it to be booked up!!
