“Outstanding in every way. Modern decor.”

Impeccable service in every way. Very prompt room service. Alacritous and helpful reception staff, concierge, fitness center attendants, doormen, etc. The service and quality here equals that of far more expensive hotels.

The hotel is in a lovely old building, with a modern interior decor which is not to my taste and not in keeping with traditional British style, but which may appeal to the hip set. Our single room was of a nice size--particularly for London and in view of our reasonable room rate--with a large bathtub and separate shower. There was space enough (although without much to spare) for me and my spouse and our ample luggage. There is a very large workout room with lots of equipment, an adequately sized lap pool, a steam room and a sauna. In fact this hotel had the nicest fitness facility I have seen in any business hotel.

The hotel is conveniently situated quite close to the theater district and Trafalgar Square, right across the street from the Somerset House cultural center.

One Aldwych may be expensive, but is worth every penny. First, there is a beautiful bar in the lobby, high definition T.V. in the room, huge bathroom with T.V., separate shower and tub, soundproof airconditioned rooms, free wifi, robes and houseshoes, daily newspapers of your choice, refrigerator, and a medium-sized room by European standards. There must be 30 Italian and Indian restaurants within 4 blocks, all theaters are within walking distance, the British Museum is closeby, we can see the London Eye from our room, and the Waterloo Bridge is one block away. There is excellent retail shopping nearby, and even a Starbucks 100 yards from the hotel. Also, the Tesco grocery across the Strand sells Krispy Kreme doughnuts. What more could anyone want?

I loved our rooms at One Aldwych. The decor was my idea of perfection -- minimalist and modern, with great color choices. And the view was nice. I liked the juxtaposition of a traditional building exterior with a contemporary interior. Happily, good windows blocked virtually all street noise, so the busy traffic below was not an issue. The location was convenient, and for us was a nice change from the areas where we had stayed on previous trips. For those new to London, do note the city is large enough that no hotel can truly be convenient to everything -- you are advised to pick your priorities. One Aldwych was an easy walk to the Somerset House with its art galleries and kid-pleasing fountain (a tip -- look for a great ice cream kiosk on the back patio), Waterloo Station, the Temple tube stop, and many bus routes. Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, and many historic sights and theaters were also a short walk, although ironically the shows we saw on this trip were all located at the other end of the theater district, still walkable but not super close. Other positives at the hotel were excellent food at both breakfast and dinner, an attractive indoor swimming pool (which we used only once but were glad to have as an option), and friendly, excellent service. The concierge was accessible and informed. About the only thing I didn't care for was the interior of the elevators, decorated with vibrant lights that were almost headache-producing. Also, the mattress was very firm, maybe too much so. Some might miss having a grand lobby, but I didn't mind the low profile entrance that skirted one side of the ground floor bar. Overall, an outstanding hotel!

From the doorman opening the door to welcome us, to the final goodbye, our stay at 'One Aldwych ' was an experience of being welcomed and cared for. I had organised a birthday trip for my husband for his 65th 'Officially Old' birthday, We were cordially welcomed at reception only to discover that we had been upgraded, and they were anxious to show us the room to see if we liked it, although it was not quite ready. We were taken up by one of the Concierge team, and shown around a magnificent suite with superb views overlooking Waterloo Bridge and the Thames-It even boasted its own separate Gym! They accomodated our request for two separate duvets without any problem. The room was finely furnished with all the most up to date and high quality technical conveniences, and there were several arrangements of fresh orchids and plates of fresh fruit. As we had to wait for about half an hour, we were taken back down to the Lobby Bar and given a free glass of champagne!
Later in the evening we returned from having seen a show and had dinner, to find the room beautifully prepared with the promised duvets, low lighting, clean cups and glasses, and replacement towels, and a tray with a personalised letter from the Customer Relations manager wishing a 'Happy Birthday' to my husband, a slice of Chocolate Gateau (on a plate with 'Happy Birthday' piped onto it!), two glasses and a lovely bottle of Grand Cru Champagne. I know that upgrades are perhaps unusal, and one cannot expect such a lovely room each time, but the overwhelmingly important thing is that we were made to feel special from the minute we stepped throught the door, and I think that is the way all the staff treat all of their guests. We will undoubtedly be returning!

There are many great hotels in London and much depends on where one wants to stay. If you crave the West End then the One Aldwych is the place to stay. The service has always been excellent and the larger rooms are bright, designed well and very comfortable. Room service is efficient, and the in room dining was good. The interior is nice and the bar is wonderful with an excellent selection of drinks. We mix it up when staying in London but this is a hotel we always return to and highly recommend.

Just a minute walk from thaters, Covent Garden and all its shops and restaurants, some blocks away from Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, the underground and the Thames. Concierges were always helpful. The room is small but beautiful.
