Owner description: Far beneath the majesty and splendor of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protegee Christine Daae is so strong that even her heart cannot resist. The musical opened at Her Majesty's Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 26th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty's Theatre in London's West End, after more than 10,000 performances. Andrew Lloyd Webber's mesmerizing score along with jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking special effects, magically combine to bring this tragic love story to life each night.

“Dreadful - amateur night, NOT what it was”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014 via mobile

I loved ALW in the 80s and was brought up on it. Thus I had all the tapes and knew the words by heart. I have also seen most of the videos/ DVDs. One of the live performances we didn't see in London at the time was Phantom, so I must admit to great anticipation when recently we booked some of the best tickets in the house.

I may have been too eager, but I was massively disappointed. This was amateur night on a grand scale. The cast were not taking the performance seriously and a number of the performers both sounded and acted drunk - complete with some poorly concealed staggering and sniggering on stage at times. It was as if they had all been down the pub just beforehand. They basically treated the audience (primarily of foreign tourists) with contempt.

The attitude of the theatre staff was little better. We were kept queuing in the main foyer until very shortly before the performance commenced without a hint of an apology - more Ryanair than air of sophistication.

Then during the performance the ushers regularly came down the aisles shining very bright torches into the eyes of the audience checking that no-one was recording anything. I can see why they might have been concerned - any recording of the worst parts of the performance that was publicised could easily have drastically affected future sales.

I am astonished that ALW allows his name to be associated with what I must regrettably describe as a travesty which mocks the memory of what from the audio recordings I have at home was once an immaculately performed masterpiece.

Avoid - at least until there is an (almost ) complete reorganisation of the performers and the theatre staff.

This had me in tears pretty much from the start. And be prepared for a little special effects. For those who like the classical musicals this is a must see!

“Great performance.”

Fantastic vocals all around, great sound from the pit orchestra. The seats in Her Majesty's Theatre aren't incredibly comfortable, but it's an old theatre, so don't have your hopes set too high. We had seats in the Grand Circle in the right section. It was sometimes hard to see the stage. Worth every penny though--it's a fantastic musical!
