“A fabulous tour !”
Reviewed 28 September 2012

I really cannot recomend this tour of Spencer House enough, owned privayely by Lord Rothschild and so only open on a Sunday. The house is beautiful and well worth a visit but the visit is massively enhanced by the imformative, fun and knowledgeable lady that takes you around. Myself and my mother arrived there on a horrible wet Sunday with suitcases but the staff at Spencer house could not have been more helpful, having a secure cloakroom where we could leave our luggage and wet coats was a bonus that allowed us to enjoy this fabulous tour all the more. Do not be put off by the fact that it is a tour, you would never get the same enjoyment out of just wandering around this house. Allow just over an hour for the tour though it so unformal that I guess it varies depending on how much interest the visitors show. Do make sure to check exactly how to get there as it is down a small street though very convenient for Green Park Tube.

“Sumptuous restoration featuring exquisite 18th century decorative arts”
Reviewed 22 September 2012

If you enjoy beautiful neo-classical 18th century architecture, furniture, and art works then this tour will delight you.
One of the last great London townhouses of the aristocracy, Spencer House was re-opened after renovation and restoration by Lord Rothschild (the current lessee of the land and house still technically owned by the Spencer family) in 1991 by the late Princess Diana (having been born a Spencer, this was highly appropriate). Our tour guide was a delightful lady who had a most welcoming demeanor and a tremendous knowledge of the background of the pieces in the house which she highlighted.

This is only open to the public on Sundays, so it's important to plan properly. We arrived around 1150a and were able to join the next tour which left a little after noon.

“A palatial 18th C London "townhouse" that was home to Lady Diana's family”
Reviewed 13 April 2012

Spencer House, as the name might suggest, was the family home of Lady Diana although the House is now owned and opperated by the Rothschild family. The House plays host to a variety of private functions during the week so, to my knowledge, is only open to the public on Sundays and even then, visitors can only be guided through certain rooms of the house. Nevertheless, I do recommend a visit as the rooms are exquisitely decorated and furnished in a manner befitting a palace rather than a townhouse. Also, keep an eye out for the Vermeer painting!
