I went to this gallery with my daughter who wanted to go. I was only mildly interested, but it was a wonderful experience. I am so glad we shared it. It has magnificent portraits of important people in England's history. It even had a level dedicated to Vivien Leigh who I knew little about except for "Gone with the Wind." The BP Portrait Award 2014 display is fabulous - such a display of talent. Being a teacher, I was so impressed with the dedication shown to helping young people develop their artistic talents. The most amazing thing is that this impressive museum is all free.

We went here on the recommendation of a tour guide and we were not disappointed. Upstairs there are portraits of the many historical people in London as well as others who will surprise you! Worth the time to be sure!

This Gallery is one of the world's most popular with a huge collection of historical portraits down the centuries which can be viewed chronologically. It features a huge number of small and large exhibitions which have included huge retrospectives of David Bailey and Lucien Freud. Currently the BP Portrait Award which draws 200,000 visitors a year, is the main attraction and most of the work, from around the world, shows how alive the best traditions of portraiture are.

Just ran into see the BP Portrait Award which was beautiful and diverse. Couldn't help wondering why none of the pictures had anyone smiling. The pictures were diverse which made them all the more interesting. Loved the captions as well. Followed up on a NYT article from Sunday, 6/15/14 on Cultured Traveler/London about the Legacy in the Slave Trade and went to see Room 20 where they had a picture of the Anti-slavery Society Convention of 1840 in Room 20. Very interesting.

The NPG IS often overshadowed by the Tates and left off the tourist schedule - understandably, as the British focus probably means most of the subjects are unknown to overseas visitors - but do drop by for a look at the annual BP Portrait Award exhibition (on until Sept 21). It's free, it has several works by overseas artists, is well presented & totally inspirational. And best of all for weary tourists, it's quite small, therefore not as tiring as eg the RA Summer Exhibition.
