I've been to some spectacular major exhibitions at the RA in the past few years but I always enjoy the annual Summer Exhibition. It's on now until August 12 and, if you're at all interested in art and have a couple of hours to spare in London, do go and see it. From several thousand entries from both amateur and professional artists, the committee have selected nearly 1500 to exhibit. (A tip: I find it best to view them quickly and go back to the ones that catch the eye or I'd be there all day, looking but not seeing.)The range of styles and media is wide, mostly paintings but also including sculptures and architectural models, and, although the emphasis is towards modern, you should find plenty that will appeal. And it's not at all "stuffy" - plenty to smile at ... well, I hope it's intended! Most are for sale although they do get snapped up early. And note that the RA add a 30% + vat commission on top of the catalogue price! A good cafe in the courtyard and somewhere to sit and eat your sandwiches completes the picture, just a short walk from the shops in Regent St and Bond St.
