This is an exquisite gem. Like staying in the house of an old stately uncle: antiques, art, sculpture, lovely private bar make this a perfect retreat from the London madhouse. Comfy beds, relatively quiet. Staff quite solicitous, and welcoming.

Room Tip: Choose your favourite character! All rooms have names.

Staying at The Rookery is a lot more than just staying at an hotel - it is no less than a time journey, back to the London you've just read about or seen in TV series. Ouside the brick walls is a modern city, true, but inside The Rookery offers an oasis of early Victorian calmness. The rooms are furnished with antiquities - beds, tables and wardrobes, paintings and lamps - making a cosy, old-fashioned atmosphere throughout the building. If you come to London to look for the good old days, you can harldy find any better place to dwell. Supreme service from smiling and charming staff - right down to the hotel's own cat, Lady Gray. Those in need of every modern conveniences shpuld be advised that even the bathrooms keep Victorian standards here, but that's how it must be to make the time journewy perfect. Note also that there's no breakfast room, your morning meal is being served in your room. In the close vicinity are several small and diverse restaurants, but the neighbourhood as such is tot the most exiting in London. But
Farringdon tube station is few minutes away, and you can walk to Barbican, Tower or Holborn in just a short time. I'd like to give The Rookery my very best recommendations. I've never felt so much at home in a hotel as I did there.

Room Tip: There's no elevator, so avoid the upper floors if you don't like narrow stairs.

I stayed at the Rookery Hotel for several nights in the summer of 2013.

AMBIANCE:
The hotel was absolutely charming and adorable. It was tucked away on a narrow, cobble stoned street that really made me feel transported to another era of London. The common rooms, such as the library and the parlor, were full of beautiful antique furniture and vintage books.

ROOM:
Considering the norm of tiny rooms in European hotels, I thought that our room was (relatively) spacious (we booked a "superior double" I think) and was well appointed. Like the common spaces, the room had an old-world charm, with a fire place, brass lamps, comfy wing-backed chairs, heavy drapes and an antique armoire. (The only down-side was that the TV was "antique" too.) The bathroom of the room I was in had a tub/shower combination with decent water pressure. I had some difficulty managing the two separate faucets for hot and cold water but it wasn't actually much of a problem. The room felt fresh and clean, and had modern amenities such as a mini-fridge.

LOCATION:
The hotel is located, I believe, in the business district. At night, the streets would be teeming with people overflowing out of the pubs. I didn't have a problem with the crowd or the noise. The hotel is about a block from the Farringdon tube station. Although it is not on a major line, it has quick, easy access to other stations. The hotel is walking distance to St. Paul's Cathedral and the Themes River (not far from the Millennium bridge). There are several restaurants and cafes on the same block as the hotel that were convenient and good (at least the ones I tried).

STAFF:
In my experience, the staff was friendly and helpful. When I had issues with my power converter plug, they supplied me with a loaner. They were also helpful in getting us a taxi when we needed one.

VALUE:
This is definitely not a "budget hotel," but considering the exorbitant prices charged by many of the hotels in London, it was reasonable. I did a LOT of price comparison prior to booking and for the location, atmosphere and space, it was definitely the best I found. If you don't plan on spending very much time at your hotel, then the atmosphere probably doesn't matter as much, but if style/atmosphere/comfort are a priority for you, The Rookery delivers.

OTHER:
There is an honor bar in the lounge, although I did not utilize it so I can't speak to its quality or value. The wifi worked well. There is a very sweet house cat who roams the halls.

What an absolute gem of a place. I stayed there for two nights and didn't want to leave. It was excellent in every way: great location in Farringdon; fabulous style and decor; lovely ambience; spotlessly clean; great staff and overall service. It was like stepping back in time and losing oneself in a little bit of English history. Highly recommended if you want a cosy historical charm.

Rookery is the slightly less famous sister hotel of Hazlitt's. Same style and atmosphere meaning narrow creaky corridors, quirky but stylish rooms and of course a house cat (Lady Grey). Classy lounge with honesty bar. Separate faucets for warm and cold water. All in all a very english experience.

Unfortunately most cabbies dont know about it or the adress. Tell them 'where Cowcross St meets St Johns Lane' and it'll be fine. Also note that there is no restaurant or gym or any other 'modern' facilities. Breakfast is delivered to your room at the time of your choice.

Room Tip: The street outside can be a bit noisy at weekends. Maybe get a room at the back if thats not your th...

I recently stayed at this utterly charming hotel the last week of February into early March. The Rookery is England at its best. Everything is immaculate, there is a friendly staff that knows the neighborhood and can advise on restaurants, bars, etc. Having stayed in virtually every section of London previously, Farringdon is now my new favorite spot with the Rookery in the center of it. And despite all the lively activity nearby, the Rookery retains an air of quaintness -- an oasis of civilized calm. I am a huge fan!

This is a really nice experience just off Farringdon station. Highly recommended if you like the old world British history kinda style. No lift so that could be a problem for some. It feels like staying at somebody's house so if you are not a b&b person, this is probably not for you. I thought it was most excellent, though.
