Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London

The location next to the park and close to Harvey Nic and Harrods means that you not only have great shopping nearby, but also great restaurants. Mandarin Oriental is on of the best hotel groups, perhaps even the best, but their London property needs some TLC. I got great service, a nice upgrade (large room), but it was too used to feel like a real MO. Its like getting the old BA first class vs. the new; its good, but dated. And you know they can do better. The bar was nicer before the redid it some time ago, and its more drunk biz-pople than a mixed crowd there. Dinner by Heston was closed due to flew issues?? for a week, and Baloud in the basement is not very cozy or elegant. Comparing London to the still great NYC property, or the fantastic Bangkok property, its not worthy of the MO-brand. But its still a good hotel, make no mistake. Call in the designers and redo the reception, bar and first floor area with some seating, touch-up the rooms, and the impression will be so much better!

Room Tip: An updated room on the side facing the park (less noise)

Dear Gudleiv, firstly, let me just say what a great pleasure it was to have you stay with us at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London recently and thank you for taking the time to post a review on Tripadvisor. Your valuable feedback is much appreciated and we were thrilled to read that you enjoyed our fantastic location and world famous Mandarin Oriental service so much. With that said, however, we were most disappointed to learn that you were not entirely satisfied with every aspect of your experience, primarily as a result of our room product. Service excellence is the pillar on which we build upon, and our aim is to consistently provide this to all our guests, so I am therefore disappointed the product let us down this time. Your feedback on the accommodation has been well noted and been shared with the relevant departments. The hotel continues to invest behind its’ product including new food and beverage offerings, pool and wellbeing facilities and is in the process of finalising a rooms renovation plan for the near future. We will also be opening an exciting new Tea and Champagne lounge in 2014, providing a public space for guests to relax and enjoy refreshments. On behalf of everyone here at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, we would love the opportunity to have you stay with us again to demonstrate that this was an isolated incident and highlight that not all of our accommodation is of the standard you experienced. If you would allow us to, I would like to personally take care of your next reservation and ensure you are well look after and thereby restore your faith in Mandarin Oriental.

With best regards

The lobby at the top of the stairs has a welcoming log fire but only two chairs if you are waiting to meet somebody or for a taxi. The doorman will open the door and hail a taxi for you.
Not the sort of place you can wander into. Although you could drink in the bar area at the back beside the Dinner restaurant.
My lunch at Heston Blumenthal's Dinner restaurant was a delight, open to all who are willing to pay for a special occasion.
The hidden reception rooms at the back associated with royalty were interesting for those who can afford private functions such as weddings.
The downstairs staff were abundant and willing. The long wait to see a bedroom was ridiculous.
The bedroom I saw was delightfully comfortable. Everything five star. Marble floor bathroom. Bidet. The widest bed you can imagine. But the balcony was a disappointment, no chairs, and if you wanted to smoke or take a photo, uninviting. I was scared to step out to see the view and take a photo for fear of bringing back dirt and moss onto the opulent carpet. The decor of this room was colourless and old fashioned but other rooms are in different styles. The hotel will be much more attractive later in the year when they finish the swimming pool. My companion liked the dark entrance hall. I prefer light and white and was happier in the main dining room.

Room Tip: The room cleanliness was excellent but the balcony was covered with moss. I'd ask for a picture...

What can I say that would do this place justice. This was a special birthday present for my boyfriend and we stayed 1 night. I did tell the staff that it was a birthday gift but nothing could have prepared us for the brilliant suite and service we got. Everyone could not have been nicer even although it was obvious we were not super-rich. It's beautifully decorated in nouveaux/deco
style and feels really luxurious.
We were greeted by the red-jacketed porters who opened the doors for us and immediately took our bags (small though they were). The reception staff were so nice and they called the duty-manager to greet us, who was lovely and couldn't do enough. We were then taken to out room by the same receptionist who had booked us in and were taken to the Lichfield Suite which, quite honestly, blew us away. They had left us a bottle of champagne/fruit basket and a lovely chocolate cake/mousse marking my partner's birthday. The suite was gorgeous and had a 'Nespresso' machine in it (that made my day as I love good coffee). We went for dinner near Harrods and came back to our fabulous luxury. Great night in a very comfortable bed. Breakfast in the morning was again, absolutely fabulous. By this time I had ate my way through Knightsbridge but it really was a spectacular breakfast and exactly what we had ordered.
We chilled out a bit watching the huge TV then had a shower in the great walk-in shower with enormous monsoon shower-head, fluffy towels & fluffy robe & slippers.
We had a nice walk round Harrods and went back to semi-checkout as we were having lunch at Heston's restaurant. Another manager came down to check that the weekend had went to plan and was extremely nice. We left our bags and went to have lunch (excellent at Hestons by the way). Then we had a walk in Hyde park. The whole time was perfect and both my boyfriend and I felt like we had been treated really specially. If I had lots of money I would stay there every time but alas I'm not a millionaire but that kind of service really makes one want to aspire to save and do it all again. I would recommend anyone to stay at the Mandarin Oriental as it's a lovely treat, great service, location, food, amenities....I could ramble on & on, as I was so impressed. No wonder celebrities stay there - Superb!!! Thanks so much to all the staff.

Room Tip: If you can afford a suite - do it. Really great.

We have stayed at a few Mandarins, with our favourite being the flagship in Hong Kong.

However the experience in London was not a good one, and we will not return:
1. Upon weekday arrival at 4pm, we were asked to wait for 20 minutes for our room, making us late for a meeting.
2. Upon checkin we were not told that the main restaurant was closed due to food poisoning. Having breakfast with a view on Hyde Park was one of the main reasons to choose the Mandarin. The alternative in the basement was overheated and felt like a 3 star US hotel restaurant. So we had breakfast at the Berkeley Hotel opposite.
3. The room itself was run-down, with paint peeling off the walls. The walls are thin so that we were woken by neighbours music at 7am. The telephone did not work. In fact, the entire interior of the hotel is in dire need of renovation.
4. Charging for internet access is ridiculous for a hotel of this stature and these rates.
5. Before checking out, we asked reception to prepare the bill, which they didn't. Then the computers didn't work, and we were delayed again.
Fittingly, upon checking out and leaving, not a single person asked us how are stay was - always a bad sign.

Dear SK , firstly let me just say what a great pleasure it was to have you stay with us at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London recently and thank you for taking the time to post a review on Tripadvisor. Your valuable feedback is much appreciated and helps us to further enhance our product and guest experience. With that said, however, we were most disappointed to learn that you were not entirely satisfied with every aspect of your experience on this occasion and were alarmed at comments relating to 1) The condition of the room and 2) The check in / check out service discrepancies you encountered whilst here. We agree this is most unacceptable and apologise for any inconvenience caused. We are currently investigating these issues further and would like to invite you to contact the hotel directly to speak with the Hotel Manager (+44 (0)20 7235 2000 or via email at molon-info@mohg) so that we can better understand how these situations occurred and ensure corrective measures are put in place to safeguard against this happening again. In regards to our Internet Policy, as a five star luxury hotel, we need to be constantly reinvesting resources in our infrastructure in order to ensure the quality, consistency and security of our Internet service remains at the highest possible standard. For this reason we have to levy a small supplemental charge for access to ensure that we deliver the highest grade of performance in high-speed Internet connection. We stayed in the Turret Suite. The suite was medium in size but it was perfect for 2 people to be more than comfortable with a generous living area and a large marble bathroom. The room overlooked Knightsbridge. The view was wonderful especially in the evening.

The service at the Mandarin Oriental is perfect as usual. We mainly enjoy staying at the Mandarin hotels because of their service. The bar downstairs was very entertaining and almost always full but we were always accommodated to a table whenever we chose to visit.

The location of the hotel is just across Harrods and Harvey Nichols among other high end shops and boutiques where you can spend hours and days of shopping or walking around without a minute of boredom.

We also had dinner at Heston's Dinner restaurant located in the hotel but I will leave its review for another time.

Very Highly recommended
