“A good surprise”
Reviewed 16 December 2013

It was my first time in this hotel: a good surprise for the british standard. It was much better than other hotels I knew in London. A good renewed single room. Good cleanliness. Excellent location, near Underground (Russell Square and Holborn), just a few minutes to British Museum, shopping areas and all the main attractions. Continental breakfast is nothing special, but you can choose english breakfast with a an extra rate. Friendly staff.

It is just what you paid for, average attention, cleanliiness and service.
My room was very small, looked very old, but t was a very cheap hotel. Having stayed at the Imperial Hotel (adjacent to this one - part of the same chain) I really believe it is worth paying a few more pounds (the difference was insignificant) and get the Imperial rooms and service.

Room Tip: Try to avoid staying on the 7th floor. You need to take a different elevator (that takes forever to...

We stayed at the President Hotel in russell square primarily to see a show, but also as a base to sight see from.
Having read the reviews for the hotel from previous stayers, we arrived with an open mind, and generally see what the hotel has to offer. Although I agree with some of the comments about refurbishment, this is not something to undertake during these times of austerity.
Our room was very good, based on size, facilities and value for money. secondary glazing provided the warmth and supprising quietness through the night, and the bathroom, although having the shower mounted over the bath and using the taps to mix the temperature, once mastering the technique for it, the shower itself was perhaps the most powerful that we have experienced in any hotel.
The bed was a little firm, but gave a good nights sleep, and the tea/coffee making facility was welcome along with the TV and it's many channels to pass waiting moments.
The bed sheets and towels were changed daily, and the cleanliness was very good as well.
The staff from the chamber maids, to desk staff and the very attentive lads in the foyer, to the waiters in the restaurants were all first class, and smartly dressed at all times.
Breakfast, although busy, was a delight with great choices for all dietry requirements. My favourite being the full english, but the cerials, fruit juices and fresh fruit offerings were all good, with tea or coffee on tap it was a delightful start to the day. The pre show carvery also was excellent with 3 meat choices and starter or desert offered as a 2 course meal. over the 2 nights we tried bothways, and could not fault it for both quantity and quality, all this in a budget hotel with 3 stars, which tries to punch above it's weight on service that would put other hotels to shame.
Our short stay for 2 nights was perfect, I agree that a weeks holiday there would probably not feel as good, but as a base for the 3 days/2 nights, it was better than we had hoped for.
We would definately stay here again for a similar break. Good transport links as well for tube, bus and loads of taxis, easy to get to and from.
Well done the president.
Ray and Chris

Room Tip: Our room on the 3rd floor was ideal, and on the front of the building.

Bit shabby but cheap and friendly. Room and linen clean. breakfast had a good range. Art Deco bar was a nice surprise. Cheaper than travel lodge for a single with breakfast included and plenty of staff on hand. Excellent location, walking distance for kings cross.

All in all fine, in this instance fine is a perfectly descriptive word. The rooms were a good size, clean. Down sides, shower was not powerful enough (not due to power but by build up of lime scale) breakfast buffet style was very busy, with a bit more planning and layout it would have been slicker. Cooked breakfast was fine, alternates not so much, cereal or fruit ( well grapefruit, orange & prunes) no breads/ meats/ yoghurt etc. for a price v location it's fine for a base, after all how much time do you spend in the room?

I walked into the reception area and was totally impressed with this area. The door was opened for us by a member of staff. The reception staff was most efficient and dealt with our party without any delay. On reaching our room my expectations were shattered as the room was nothing special and very basic. Only bars of soap were found in the bathroom and no shower gel or shampoo. The room itself was in need of a face lift. We were lucky enough to have dinner on the first evening in with our deal. This was a carvery and of acceptable quality. There were three bars open within the complex but only one stayed open after 23.00 but would not supply hot drinks. All the staff encountered were very friendly.

Pretty Average,

If you need somewhere to rest your head at night, are familiar with London and also willing to eat out, then the President would cater for your needs it was fairly cheap, the bed was comfy and the shower was impressive. Otherwise I'd book with the Imperial Hotel which is adjoined to the same building, better quality service.

Upon arrival we were greeted by pretty friendly and efficient staff at the reception and they were very informational and helpful, that's pretty much where the "Good Service" stopped. There was a constant struggle when it came to the language barrier between ourselves and some of the staff, My partner had asked about renting a laptop to which the reply was : "yes WiFi downstairs", not very helpful. I also asked if it were possible for the concierge to print an email for me which i needed to get on one of the tours i had booked, i was refused and sent down the street to pay at an internet cafe. The quality of the food needed looking at, working within the food retail industry and my with my partner having done a catering course it was easy to spot the flaws in the way the food was stored and served; Dinner was average with the food sitting under the hot plate for far to long the meat was tough and dry, although the starters were kept refrigerated, the deserts were certainly not, I don't know about you but I would expect my cheesecake , Cream filled profiteroles and the accompanying cream to be refrigerated to meet food hygiene regulations. We were asked if we wanted dessert, we replied no to which we were then told what was on the menu, a clear example of the language barrier. However the hotel was in a good location, very close to the underground which has links all over the city at very good rates. The Atrium bar, which is part of the adjoining "Imperial Hotel" (part of the same company) had a very different feel, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food in the day and night bar ,also part of the Imperial hotel, had a much better quality. If I were to go back to London i would definitely book myself into the Imperial Hotel it seemed much better quality and had that full on service that was lacking in the president.
