“A lovely little green space with a good cafe”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

This small green space just off the main road is a lovely place to relax. The grassed areas and gardens are well laid out with a water feature in the centre and feels larger than it really is.

There is plenty of room to sit on the grass and there are a limited number of bench seats.

It is popular with all types of people, students, families with children, dog walkers, joggers, older people and so on and feels very safe.

Towards one end of the square is a small cafe which offers a wide range of light eats and drinks at resonable prices and has tables both inside and out so ideal whatever the weather.

“Very nice community park”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

Friends of Russell Square pitch their tent close to the entry and sell books and are a wealth of information. The park covers the four corners of once small block and is very nice. Not only is it a well maintained park, a crossing point for many people making their way through the city, but a landmark for may tourists travelling around and to near by events. Taking a cab several times, we passed this park on on way to any destination in or near the Theatre district, Strand, Trafalgar, or heading over one of the bridges over the Thames. If you are staying in the area its a great little landmark. Never really over crowded, a cafe that is open for breakfast or mid day lunch but it gets full.

“Frisbee, dogs, fountains to play in, dogs”

Russell Square is a great park for families, pleasant and green. A cafe in one corner--haven't eaten there but people look happy. Lots of kids playing games on the weekends.

“Russell Square - Probably Bloomsbury's best city park”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

There are several small city parks in Bloomsbury, providing green space to enjoy during leisure and break time. Of these, Russell Square is the largest and probably the best option for visitors, particularly those who have finished their visit to the nearby British Museum and are in need of a nice place to rest their feet.

Russell Square was built in 1806 by Humphrey Repton - 5th Duke of Bedford. You can see his statue on the southern side of the park, facing Russell Square street. There is also a nice little cafe towards the northeast corner of the square with indoor/outdoor seating and an inward facing view of the lawn that fills the square.

There are two main walking paths that cross Russell Square, linking the four corners, with a small plaza and simple water fountain in its centre. A horseshoe path, lined with a cloister of lime trees, circles the square as well, providing a fair amount of walking space for visitors.

Russell Square is very near to the British Museum, one of London's most important attractions. It is a convenient place to visit afterwards if you want to sit on a bench and rest your feet.

Another interesting attraction in the area that we like is the historic Russell Hotel found at the northeast corner of the square. This hotel is of a fantastic architectural design that is peculiar and genuinely unique in London, offering a beautiful building facade to admire. It is well worth having a look if you visit Russell Square.

Overall, we like Russell Square. While not on par with London's Royal Parks, it is a nice patch of green space in Bloomsbury.
